We’ve had several days of rain and gray clouds here on the Plateau. I’m not complaining — we need the rain — but I do need to see some blue skies and sunshine. So I did what I often do — looked through some old pictures.
This picture was taken in July, 2002, at the Indiana Dunes State Park. I had taken Betsy to northern Indiana to see my brother and his wife and to see my hometown of Crown Point, Indiana. One day while we were up there I took her to the Dunes on Lake Michigan.
When I was a kid my parents would sometimes take us up to the Dunes in the summer to enjoy a day at the beach. We really enjoyed playing in the water, but the most interesting part of the park were the dunes themselves.
The state park is now surrounded on three sides by the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, but the state park is much as I remembered it. The park contains hiking trails, which Betsy and I enjoyed. This particular picture was taken as Betsy and I were hiking down from the top of Mt. Tom, the tallest dune in the park at 195 feet. It was a hot July day and the lake sure looked inviting at the foot of that dune!

I knew that couldn’t be east Tennessee. There is no mistaking the Lake Michigan. A colleague of mine hails from the Traverse City side of the Lake. That is some fantastic scenery, and one place that I have to find a way to visit. BTW, Lake Michigan has rebounded after going through a drought of its own.

My best friend and I (both Yankee fans) used to go to Chicago every year when the Yankees were playing the White Sox and we camped out in the dunes a few times. I always enjoyed the dunes.

Robert, I hope you do get to visit the Lake Michigan shore.
Beautiful, we can go back any time you like.
Neal, I never camped in the dunes. Could you hear the surf from the campsites?

Yes, here in East Tennessee we sure need some sunshine now. Monday night on the way home from work (I work 4PM to midnight) I heard on the radio the 2 worse places for the flooding were exactly where both my houses are-82 miles from each other. Luckily neither has flooded yet. The Rockwood house has more of a chance, it is real close to Whites Creek on Hwy 27, where the Boy Scouts all drown years ago. Tuesday night on the way home I heard Pigeon Forge has opened up a center for the people that are having to leave their homes.

We used to love going to the dunes in Door County, Wisconsin. Feels almost like being at the ocean.
We’ve got rain as well as high winds. 5.4 inches in the past two days.

That’s beautiful George! When I first saw the picture I thought I was looking at some gorgeous beach in the caribbean. I’ve never seen any of the great Lakes before. I understand they are beautiful! I certainly believe it from this pic. Thanks for sharing it!

You & Betsy need to come view Lake Michigan in Michigan itself next! (And stop by and say hello to me on the way!) 🙂

I’ve never been that far north, therefore, I’ve never seen the Great Lakes – but I’ve always heard that the water looks that blue & like the ocean! Very pretty shot!

I’m often amazed at how similar different parts of the nation can resemble one another. I’ve got photos taken along the California coastline that look very much like this … It’s Beautiful!
Hugs and blessings,

Very pretty place George. Even though I lived in Indiana for many years, I never got to go there.
