The picture above was taken along the Ohio River in Madison, Indiana, in August, 2002.
Betsy and I were on a waterfalling vacation that would take us to Niagara Falls and other waterfalls in New York. We had gone to Madison to visit Clifty Falls State Park, which contains several waterfalls. We found the park to be very nice and we did some hiking, but there was very little water going over the falls.
Madison is a pretty historic town founded in 1809. It became quite wealthy from the riverboat trade on the Ohio and many of the early homes built in the town are still standing. Betsy and I explored the historic downtown area in the early evening, and then found a floating restaurant along the river front. This picture was taken as we were leaving the restaurant after dinner. I like this picture because of the way the colors in the sky are reflected in the river. The picture can be enlarged to see more detail.

Hi George,
I live here in WV on the border with Ohio and that Mighty Ohio River in between. Your photo is very much what I see here.
Englarging this was well worth it – lovely.

Lovely…that’s my river, but I’m downstream 🙂 This really is a beautiful photo of it. I’ve never really been to Clifty Falls. Mike and I were going to go last summer on the way home from a Kentucky vacation, but ended up going differently. Now you have made me want to add it to my list of places to go explore this coming summer.

Mary, I think you’ll like Clifty Falls. We went back in the spring of 2007 when there was more water and had a great time hiking in the park.

I’ve always liked Madison and that area. When we were there the last time we went up river from Madison and sat at the locks until a barge come through so we could watch it go through the locks. My first cousin used to work on one of the barges. He would be gone from home for 28 days and then be home for 28 days. I’d love to take a trip on one.

I didn’t realize that there were so many waterfalls here in NY..I need to get out and see some..

Michelle, there are almost as many waterfalls in New York as there are in Tennessee. Betsy and I are going to have to get back up there to visit some more of them.

Ms Hays, there are many beautiful places up north, but I’m still glad to be in Tennessee.

Pretty picture! I discovered Madison, Indiana on the internet several years ago and I would love to visit that little town.
I think every state has a city called Madison. I used to live in the pretty little city of Madison, Alabama.

Carla, if you get the chance go to Madison, Indiana. I think you’ll really enjoy it. They’re celebrating their bicentennial this year.

That is a nice picture! Wish I was seeing it in person…the big rivers really fascinate me. Much more so than the oceans. I always wonder who was the first to cross the Mississippi or the Ohio in a canoe. Things like that cross my mind every time I cross one of them.

It is beautiful when you enlarge it and you can see all the colors. I wish I was on that house boat. I have always wanted to rent one and go on one for a few days.

Guess what George! Looks like I was the 1000th person to visit your profile today! How about that? Do I get a prize? Beautiful Watery Wed. picture and post.

George: Neat captures of the Ohio River. I think of Lewis and Clark every time I cross the big river.
