George and Betsy on a bicycle for two, Cades Cove GSMNP, Tennessee. June, 2007.
Since our northern friends are sending artic cold weather down here to Dixie, I pretty much stayed in the house after we got back from our weekly grocery shopping trip (love those Wednesday senior discounts!). I didn’t get as much done with my stamps as I had hoped, but I did get through some pictures, which is where I rediscovered this picture.
Our friends Judy and Charlie take camping trips much as Betsy and I take waterfalling trips. Judy and Charlie usually camp at Cades Cove at least once a year, and we go over to see them at their campsite.
In addition to camping and hiking, Judy and Charlie also bike and they always bike through Cades Cove at least once while they are staying there. When we visited them in June, 2007, they had, in addition to their mountain bikes, a bicycle built for two. Somehow the conversation turned to that bicycle and, after giving us a demonstration, both Judy and Charlie urged us to take a spin.
I’ll admit I was all for it. I rode my bicycle to work for more than twenty years and I loved biking, although I do not now own a bicycle. I joined in urging Betsy to take a spin with me and she finally agreed. But looking closely at the picture above (you can click on it to enlarge it), I think she was less than enthusiastic about the whole thing. What do you think?

George: You are correct, I think she was a good sport to do it because she looks scared to death in this photo. Maybe you had just shook the bike. LOL

Ha—Fishing Guy, you are right… George was doing everything he could to shake and wiggle that bike… Besides, I was in back and he was leading…. What a switch!!!!! ha ha ha

Well, Betsy is not smiling like she is in every other picture I have seen of her. Pretty good indication. She was probably scared you were going to take off for the loop road with her on the back of that thing. Those 2 big down slopes would have been the dickens. I know you are suppose to walk the bikes there, but she might have believed you would.

It seems every time I ride my bike, I fall and scrape up my hand and elbow and knees. My bike was tall and I had a hard time getting my leg over the bar when I was getting off and I would fall. I finally got a different bike. It is so hilly around here though, I can’t ride up steep hill roads. I love Cades Cove. I have camped there too.

Next time, I advise separate bikes. That way Betsy can enjoy looking around Cades Cove.

George she doesn’t look like she’s having the time of her life! I have to admit I wouldn’t want to ride with my husband either. We are both hard headed! I bet biking in Cade’s cove would be wonderful though!

I suspect you’re right … in fact the photo made me think of the Peanuts TV cartoon with Lucy’s little brother riding on the back of his mom’s bike.
