Last Monday Betsy and I took a trip to the Smokies — a place we like to visit several times a year. We decided to drive the Roaring Fork Motor Trail behind Gatlinburg since it had been several years since we had driven that road.
The road follows Roaring Fork (hence the name) for much of the way, so we stopped quite often to take in the beauty of the stream. I was happy for the opportunity to try out my new variable density neutral filter, which allows me to use extremely slow shutter speeds. The exposures for the photos in this post were from 15 to 24 seconds.

We were mostly interested in the flowing water and cascades of Roaring Creek, but the moss-covered rocks in and bordering the stream were also interesting and beautiful in their own right.

I’ve decided I rather like the way the long exposures smooth out the water while preserving the sense of motion. I’ve got a lot to learn about using this filter effectively, but I’m pleased with the results of this first experiment.

i like the way the water is smooth, but the photos are a tad dark, can you lighten the filter? what kind of filter did you get?

Your new filter does a good job of letting you take pictures at a slower speed, hence smoothing out the water. I love the scenery!

This is a really unusual effect. It is pretty and looks like paintings rather than photos. Or maybe in between.

Your flowing water photos look great. I’ve been trying to figure out how to set my camera best to capture running water this way. I don’t have a filter though. I read somewhere that shooting through a pair of sunglasses can have a similar effect. Beautiful photos!

Wow! 15 to 24 seconds! That sure does smooth out the water, but the effect on the mossy rocks is out of thisworld! They are so crisp!

Hi George, i always love the silky effects in waterfalls, have been trying to do just that but i don’t have a very sturdy tripod, i suppose! What filter are you and Betsy talking about?

Oh i now read it, variable density neutral filter, i dont know that yet. But i have ND filter, which i seldom use. That cascade on the mossy rocks is so very beautiful, i want to take something like that too.
