In September, 2011, Betsy and I drove from Hocking Hills, Ohio, to Blackwater Falls, West Virginia. It was a dreary, overcast day, but we were driving back roads as we usually do and were enjoying the scenery.
As we neared Philippi, West Virginia, we suddenly came to a covered bridge. Covered bridges are pretty unusual, and finding one in use is even more unusual. After we got across the bridge, we just had to find a place to stop so we could get a picture.

this is truly a very unusual covered bridge.. not the average for sure. and boy is it old.

We have a number of covered bridges here where we live and one is called a double barrel covered bridge as it is divided down the center for coming or going.

The sign doesn’t say how long it is, but it looks very long. We have a still-usable covered bridge in our area, but it’s not intended for semis; and one tried to go through it several months ago, tearing the bridge apart inside. The repair has finally been completed, and it’s open again. I can’t imagine having one on a U. S. highway, though, and handling that kind of traffic. Pretty amazing. Great photograph. What a find and reward for traveling those back roads.

I’ve often wonder why bridges were covered in the first place? This one seems longer than most I’ve seen in photos. A large family could live in it quite well and have plenty of room to move around. It’s beautiful!
