I CAN Enjoy Snow

George playing in the snow with his children. January, 1977.

I was going through some old pictures yesterday and came across the picture above.  I’ve taken so much grief from Betsy about not liking snow that I thought I would post it in my own defense.

The picture was taken in January, 1977.  (You can tell from the hair that it was taken many years ago!).  At that time I was living in Black Mountain, North Carolina.  Black Mountain is in the mountains of western North Carolina and is absolutely beautiful.  We didn’t get much snow at all, so when it did snow it was quite an occasion.

The two children are my daughter Kelly (age 5) and son Bob (age 8).  We had just finished making the snowman and were getting ready to welcome their mother when she came out to admire our work.  (Bob always has had a tendency to overdo things!!).

We had lots of fun after that snowstorm.  Perhaps my current dislike of snow has less to do with the snow and more to do with the increasing years.  NAH —  that’s not possible, is it?

I used to love snow as well. I grew up in Boone where we had a lot of snow. When we lived in Wisconsin, we enjoyed all the winter sports and loved the snow. When our children went off to college, somehow the snow became more of a burden. I had a long commute to work and began to hate all the ice and snow. One primary reason for selecting Brevard was that there are mountains and little snow.

That’s a lot of snow and a wonderful photo!

I think the thing I dislike most about the snow is that people don’t know how to drive in it and all the salt on the roads that turn my red car to white. 🙂

George: We all had a lot more hair in the past. The age excuse doesn’t work because it’s no worse today to get out in the snow for me. The real problem is when it gets too cold to snow say 5F and throw in a wind chill factor of -20F on top. That is when these old bones resist going out.

Soccer Boy, he’s seven, and I had a good snow battle last week and it was fun. He started by throwing a shovel full my way and it all went downhill from there. the last of it was good packing snow and firing snowballs until we were both covered.

FG — it sounds as if you had a good snowball fight with your grandson. My grandson lives in Florida, and I’m not sure he’s even seen snow in person. We’ll have to get him up here in the winter. I agree with you about the agony of it being too cold to snow.

Happyone — I grew up in northern Indiana and southern drivers in snow drive me crazy. I stay as far away from them as possible.

    Betsy — there’s nothing I can say!

That’s an admirable snowman there! You’ll have to build one for Betsy now and make up for that wifey comment!

Betsy, you have hit the bottom and started digging. 🙂

I really don’t like to see it snow either. It’s not so much the snow but it’s how it makes people have “stupid attacks” when driving:) We live on a corner and it was really slick here Saturday evening so someone started to turn down out street and was going to fast (stupid) and went all the way across the road and run over the stop sign on the other side of the street. They missed a fire hydrant about 2 feet….now that would have been a good show if they had run over it. If a car had been at the stop sign they would have plowed right into it.

BTW, you know what they say about hair….
As you grow older it grows deeper into your head. When it hits gray matter it turns gray, when it hits a vacuum it falls out. 🙂
