Six Random Things

chinastudents

My first class of Chinese students. Tianjin, PRC, August, 1987.

I have been tagged by my blog-friend Neal at Photographic Memories to take part in the “Six Random Things About Me” meme.  So here are six random things about me (not necessarily in any order):

1.  When I went to summer orientation before my freshman year in college, my advisor told my father that I was not college material.  Less than seven years later that same man hired me to teach at the same college!

2.  I took my first teaching job in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1963 because they paid a whopping $5000 per year!

3.  When my parents and little sister came to visit us in Montreat, North Carolina, Janet (my sister) was floored that Billy Graham knew my name.

4.  After teaching mathematics for 20 years, the Dean of the College assigned me to teach a course in computer science.  My qualifications?  The junior high my son attended had a computer!

5.  I have taught English as a second language in China on four separate occasions.

6.  I can’t go out to work in the yard without my iPod.

These are the rules:

1. Link to the person who tagged you.
2. Post the rules on your blog.
3. Write six random things about yourself.
4. Tag six people at the end of your post and link to them.
5. Let each person know they’ve been tagged and leave a comment on their blog.
6. Let the tagger know when your entry is up.

I’m afraid I’m going to let Neal down.  I just don’t feel comfortable tagging people at this time.  (Perhaps after I’ve been at this a while that will change.)  For now, if you would like to tell us six things about yourself, consider yourself tagged.

Any YOU didn’t say that you had a 3.97 average in college–and got your undergraduate degree in only three years!!!!! SEE–I married a VERY smart guy!!!!!

    Love you,
    Wifey

I could comment of what Betsy said but I won’t. 🙂

    No juicy stuff huh? 🙂

You’ve had an interesting life. I came to Indiana to get a summer job (I was going to college at the time) and ended up staying a Lilly almost 33 years. I went to college full time and worked full time for a couple semesters and then dropped back to going part time. Since Lilly would pay for my courses I took a lot of extra stuff and ended up with around 190 hours rather than the normal 128-130.

This is interesting. Back in 63, that would have been a nice salary. I think gasoline back then was 25 cents a gallon. I remember my mom would go to the grocery store and we would get two full shopping carts of food for $20.

I enjoyed learning more about you from your Six Random Things post and smiled at the ‘serendipity’ life delivers. I earned about the same thing for my first year of teaching. Those were the dayz weren’t they?
    Thanks for sharing ;–)
    Hugs and blessings,

Carla, now don’t give Betsy too much credit….it might go to her head. We have to keep her humble. 🙂

Neal, I didn’t realize you liked to live so dangerously!!!

HRG — yes, those were the days. Five thousand was a princely sum back then, especially for a teacher. It sure went a lot further than it does now.

Not to worry Neal… My other name is Humble Pie!!!!! har har har….. (Maybe the pie part fits—but HUMBLE?????? That’s questionable!!!! ha)… I will say you made George HOOT when he read your comment!!!!
