I came upon this meme fairly late in the day, but I thought I would try to make a contribution anyway.
The picture above was taken on Sunset Beach, North Carolina, in June, 2001. Betsy and I were on our honeymoon and we spent the day on Sunset Beach. The picture, which can be enlarged by clicking on it, shows the dunes behind the beach proper.
Sunset Beach is the smallest and quietest of the three barrier islands which make up the South Brunswick Islands. Sunset Beach, which is about three miles long, has a white sand backed by sand dunes. One reason Sunset Beach is so quiet is that the only road access to the island is across a one-lane pontoon swing bridge. All traffic had to stop when the bridge swung open to allow boats to pass along the Intracoastal Waterway. A new bridge is being built, so it will be interesting to see if the island remains fairly quiet.
I had been to Sunset Beach several times, but this was Betsy’s first visit. When this picture was taken I still had a home in Little River, South Carolina, which is about twelve miles south of Sunset Beach.

I once lived in Kinston, NC and frequently visited Atlantic Beach. The scenery was so different to anything I had ever seen in GA. This is a lovely picture tonight. Hope you & Betsy have more day trips this week to share with us.

Mildred, I haven’t been to many beaches on the other (north) side of Wilmington, but I’ve been told that they are beautiful as well.

That’s a lovely SS image. I have never been to NC before, but my relatives vacation there every year on the beach and they rave about it. Thanks for sharing and enjoy the week. Greetings from sunny and warm California.

Linnea, I hope you can make it to North Carolina in the future — it’s beautiful. I would like to make it to California some day. Thanks for stopping by.

Wonderful photo. Reminds me of the sand dunes I used to play in as a child.

When my daughters were small we would pick up cans, clip coupons, etc to save money all year. Each summer we took that money and rented a house at Sunset Beach for a week. We loved it! Back then the only way on or off was by a bridge that would swing open to let boats go through and we would have to sit and wait till it swung closed. Very wonderful memories you have brought back for me…. thank you

Peggy, as of last summer that bridge was still the only way to get onto the island. We’re going to the beach in May and I’ll let you know if the new bridge is completed.

I couldn’t open the comments on your post below, tried twice. So will leave both comments here (not sure what was wrong). First, the catelogs come at a time when they KNOW we will sit down and look at them. Spring we will be too busy so they send them now so you will find 2 additional roses you want to buy.
I guess this island is part of the Outer Banks? Never been there. Another place I want to visit. Is closer to home than the other 2 places I just have to go to. Alaska and Panama Canal. We are fixing to go to Panama Canal, but don’t tell Betsy I told you, because she is dying to hear about my cruise and I haven’t taken the needed time to tell her about it. Been so busy setting up the new blog. Thanks for ‘following’ it.

Leedra, sorry you had trouble leaving a comment — I can’t explain it either.
Sunset Beach is south of the Outer Banks, almost in South Carolina. As a matter of fact when the tide is low you can walk into South Carolina from Sunset Beach, North Carolina. But I hope you will put that on your list.

What a lovely area! We have a Sunset Beach nearby, but it doesn’t look like this … it’s a more open sandy area w/o brush growing with houses lining the boardwalk. I’ve not participated in Scenic Sunday before but may now that I have my new camera. I shared yellow pansies at Happily Retired Gal today for Today’s Flowers and a new meme called Mellow Yellow Monday and I’ve ‘mused’ this morning at Small Reflections … just because.
Hugs and blessings,

I think I should put the Carolinas in my wish list. I have been seeing beautiful sceneries of both states from fellow bloggers, and I love what they’re (you’re) showing.

The only “dunes” I’ve been to is sleeping bear dunes in Michigan. Nice to see yours!!

ewok, you definitely should put both Carolinas on your list. They are beautiful.
Shelley, the Sleeping Bear dunes are bigger than those on Sunset Beach.

Beautiful! I love the way the east coast has the dunes. This past spring, we went to Cumberland Island and it looked much the same 🙂

This is a beautiful photo…it looks so serene and peaceful. It must have been lovely to honeymoon in that area.
The depth of your shot is fantastic and I love the huge fluffy clouds way in the back of your photo. Gorgeous!
