I Think Betsy Is House-Hunting

Betsy and I traveled to Florida to celebrate Thanksgiving with my son Robert and his family.  Afterward we came home by way of our favorite beach in North Carolina.  As we usually do, we traveled by back roads and found interesting places to visit whenever possible along the way.

I didn’t get suspicious at first — after all, this was our normal routine.  But then I realized that Betsy was having me take her picture in front of some of the homes we saw along the way.

The first house she seemed interested in was the Biltmore house near Asheville, North Carolina, as you can see in the photo above.

We’ve been there many times, but this time Betsy commented on just how huge the house seemed to be.  I’m inclined to agree with her.

We stopped by the Hampton Plantation State Park near Georgetown, South Carolina, where Betsy sat on the front steps of the Rutledge Mansion, named after the last owner of the house.

Although the house is very nice, it is somewhat in ‘the middle of nowhere’. which I think is a disadvantage as far as my Beautiful Bride is concerned.

I think Betsy found her ‘dream house’ when we visited the McLeod Plantation on James Island, Charleston, South Carolina.  She had her picture taken on the back porch of the house ….

Scenic Sunday: Chattooga River

The Chattooga River is a National Wild and Scenic River which forms the boundary between South Carolina and Georgia.  There are national forests (Sumter and Chattahoochee) on both banks, which makes the river area attractive for hiking and wilderness activities.  The river is also one of the top whitewater destinations in the southeast.

The picture shows the Chattooga just above Bull Sluice, a Class V rapid on the river near Clayton, Georgia.

Watery Wednesday #126: Barefoot Landing Reflections

When Betsy and I visited the Carolinas in December, we stopped by Barefoot Landing in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina one evening after dinner.  The boardwalks across the lake were lighted and decorated with lights for Christmas.  Those lights, and the buildings along the far shore, created some beautiful reflections that attracted my attention.

O Say Can You See. . .

While Betsy and I were at Barefoot Landing in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, we saw this large flag flying at the dock.  It looked so pretty in that night sky, that I couldn’t resist trying to capture it.  I wasn’t sure how the picture would come out  since it was so dark, but I rather like the result.

Barefoot Landing After Dark

One evening at the beach, Betsy and I, after a delicious seafood dinner, stopped by Barefoot Landing in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.  Barefoot Landing in a shopping and entertainment complex built around a small lake along the Intracoastal Waterway.

Although the restaurants and theater were busy, most of the shops were closed.  That was fine with us, since we were interested in seeing the lights reflected in the lake.  The crosswalks across the lake were decorated with garlands of lights and presented a pretty view.  This picture was taken from the boardwalk around the lake near one of the crosswalks.

I went to my archives to get this winter-time picture taken at Barefoot Landing in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.  This pond is near the center of the shopping and entertainment complex.  I really like the reflections in the water.

Remembering South Carolina Waterfalls

Since we got some rain on Thursday, I was able to get some work done on my pictures and worked with a folder of pictures taken last year on our way to the beach.  When Betsy and I travel we try to arrange our trip so that we can take a break by visiting some waterfalls along the way.  This is a great plan as long as we’re traveling through an area where there are waterfalls!.

Fortunately we have to travel through mountains to get from our house to the beach.  Last year we made a couple of stops near Westminster, South Carolina.  We had to do some bushwhacking to see Fall Creek Falls and Upper Fall Creek Falls.  The trail along Brasstown Creek was better defined and led to three waterfalls, although we did have to do some creek hopping to visit a fourth.

There’s something magical about seeing waterfalls one day and the ocean the next.  We’ll be doing it again in a few weeks.

Down Memory Lane: Beach Honeymoon

When Betsy and I got married in June, 2001, I still owned a house in Little River, South Carolina.  I had lived in Little River when working in North Myrtle Beach, and I had not been able to sell it when I moved to Tennessee.

Since Betsy likes the beach, we decided to spend the week after our wedding in Little River.  I had discovered a couple of beaches across the state line in North Carolina that I was eager to share with Betsy.  We spent a couple of days at Sunset Beach, which turned out to be our favorite beach.

Little River was a little fishing village on the Intracoastal Waterway.  While fishing is still a big part of the local economy, there are other attractions for tourists as well.  Casino boats dock in Little River and take people out beyond the three mile limit so they can legally gamble.  We didn’t take a cruise on a casino boat, but we did take a cruise on a jet-powered boat, the Sea Screamer, out into the Atlantic and down the coast toward Myrtle Beach.

It’s definitely not beach weather in Tennessee now, but I feel warmer just looking over these photos again.  To see these pictures and others, click HERE.

The picture above was taken on the seawall of Charleston Harbor in Charleston, South Carolina.  It shows some of the beautiful homes on East Battery Street, many of which date back to the Civil War.  Fort Sumter, site of the first shots of the Civil War, is in the harbor off to the right.  Behind me and to the left is White Point Gardens, more commonly known as The Battery.

I lived in South Carolina for three years and have visited Charleston several times.  It’s a beautiful city and I thoroughly enjoy walking through the the historic district (as long as it’s not too hot!).

Watery Wednesday # 45: Little River Inlet

The picture above was taken on the Intracoastal Waterway in Little River, South Carolina.  I lived in Little River for four years and enjoyed my time in the area.

Little River is a fishing village north of Myrtle Beach.  As you can see from the background in the picture, the city in encroaching on the village.  Those homes weren’t there when I moved to Little River, but were built before I left.

The waterway is a little busier now as well.  When I lived there most of the boat traffic was fishing vessels or pleasure craft.  Now two casino boats are homeported in Little River.  They use Little River Inlet to access the ocean for gambling cruises.

Betsy and I visit Little River about once each year, but we go for the seafood, not the gambling.
