This building was an important part of my world in 1947, since I attended kindergarten there. South Ward in Crown Point, Indiana, is the school shown above in a picture taken in July, 2002. The picture may be enlarged by clicking on it.
South Ward was on the same street (Court Street) as the house where my family lived. The house was about three blocks from the school. When I started kindergarten, my Mom walked to and from school, but after she became convinced that I knew how to cross the streets she let me walk without her. Most of my classmates also walked by themselves — it was a different world back then.
My class was in the front of the building on the first floor. It has the windows to the left of the front door. We had low tables and chairs, too low for adults to use. If I remember correctly there were four places at each table. There was also a place in the room for our daily nap time.
Sometime in the last few years the building has been converted to condominiums. The parking lot is where the playground used to be. I have not been in the building since it was converted.
One other thing — South Ward used to be South Ward High School. That was the high school from which my Dad graduated.

Oh goody, a slice of Indiana life! Didn’t know you were from Indiana! This looks almost identical to my old school in Indianapolis! Most have been the style in those days 🙂 When did you leave Indiana?

Mary, I left Indiana in 1972 and have lived in North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, and Tennessee since then.

You have a great memory. I can hardly remember anything when I was in kindergarten.

George: What a wonderful post from your childhood, nice of you to share your grade school.
Your right about a different time. I had no fear walking to school for 18 blocks.

Great looking shot of the school, thanks for sharing.
Cheers!

Very interesting. My parents didn’t let me walk to school by myself until I was in at least 4th grade, but girls are different too though and would never have let my daughter walk to school, even if we hadn’t lived too far away. This IS a different day & age now!!! And come to think of it, they’ve already torn down my old grade school. I’m going to have to drive by there tomorrow just to see that property! LoL!

Oh…you are lucky to have a building to re-visit. My elementary school and the place I did my student teaching is now a strip mall…sigh..

It would be interesting to make your home in a former schoolhouse, wouldn’t it? Some of the older architecture is very interesting.

In our area, many of the old schools have been made into condos also. I guess their prime location, ample parking and park-like setting make them an excellent choice.

Love to hear stories like this…it is almost like seeing it with my own eyes.

That was a trip down the memory lane. Nice shot!

So many old buildings are being converted to condos. Such much better than letting them just sit there until they can’t be restored. Great to revisit and see them look good instead of needing repairs.

G’day from Australia,
What a wonderful way to share part of your formative years with us.

You are lucky to be able to go there and refresh your memories even though it has been converted, you can still go down memory lane with the same facade. It is so seldom that after that number of years anything is left standing and has not givenway to ‘progress’.

Condominiums. Sigh. I guess it’s a small blessing that they didn’t tear it down. At least you can still look at the original building.

My grade school looked pretty much like that too and I too walked all the way up the hill to go to school all by myself. I would only let my mom walk me to school the first day and insisted I could walk home alone. Your right, it’s a different world out there now!

Your school looks very much like the school that I attended George. I enjoyed reading your memories about it.
Things were so busy this week that I never got a chance to take photos for That’s My World. I hope to be back in the swing of things next week.

Thanks for sharing part of your world. Old buildings are the best. It really was a different world back then. Kids could also play all over the neighborhood without fear. It’s sad things have changed so.

Nice to see a bit of your “schooling” past! It’s a neat looking building!

How interesting to see what’s become of your school. Makes me want to drive into the area of California where I grew up and see what kind of changes there have been too. Maybe I will.
Hugs and blessings,

Interesting post of your past school days. Your building reminded me of my Tristam Burges Elementary in East Providence. I wish I had photos because I went by just a few months ago and couldn’f believe they leveled it to a vacant parcel. Too bad. My 4the grade class there determined my adult career to become a teacher.

Kathleen, one more school that I attended has been converted into a private home. I may blog about that on the next My World Tuesday. My grade school teachers had a lot to do with me going into teaching as well.
