Damage from the storm. April 18, 2009.
I mentioned in my last post that we didn’t get to see our granddaughters play softball because of the Texas weather wouldn’t cooperate. We knew before we got to Houston that the outlook wasn’t very favorable, but we weren’t prepared for Texas weather.
It rained most of the day on Saturday. But in the afternoon the wind picked up and the rain started blowing horizontally. There was no warning from the Weather Service, but I have rarely seen such rain. Seabrook, Texas, (where we were) got about seven inches of rain in a little over an hour. Streets were flooded and I thought I would have to convert our car into a boat.
And then there was the wind! The picture above shows the backyard of our son after the storm. That heavy propane grill was blown over — it took two of us to put it back. If you look carefully at the picture above (it can be enlarged), you’ll see the leg of a chair that went through their fence. It was later reported that a tornado touched down a couple of miles from their house — I’m glad we didn’t know about that at the time!
All in all I now have new respect for the slogan ‘Don’t Mess with Texas’ — or at least the weather!

I do NOT like high wind…. never have, never will. After a hurricane last year we had 65-70 mph winds and it’s scary.

Those storms made their way north into Oklahoma on sunday. Just a lot of rain here. Glad you all weren’t hurt.

George: I spent some time in the Houston area and have been through some big storms in that flat country. Very neat photo of the grill, Lucky it stayed in one piece.

Glad you are safely back home. Tornadoes are so scary and unpredictable. I’m glad it didn’t touch your family other then the grill and outside damage. Those winds must have been really high!

Welcome home! I used to live in Houston and I know about those bad storms. I can remember many times when people did have to use boats on flooded Houston streets.

The wind is scary to me, and also destructive, I’m not a fan !

Wow! 7 inches of rain in one hour! Yikes! That would have definitely been scarey even for those who live in Texas!! Glad everyone was ok and that you got that grill back into its upright place..!!
You certainly came home with some giant size stories to share. Crazy weather seems to be showing up a lot these days!!

I’ve only driven through Texas on my way to somewhere else. Each time I was lucky to have only sunshine!! 🙂

Don’t mess with Texas has a totally new meaning for me from now on..LOL I am not normally afraid of storms, but I might have had a sense of fear in this one.

That was some pretty powerful winds. No wonder if a tornado was moving past nearby. Reminds me of my time in southern England. Sideways falling rain and flooded streets, that is. Not nice wheather I can confirm.

The fury of winds is frightening, especially when it picks up objects and makes them missiles! Yikes! Glad you are all safe.

WOW … those must have been SOME WINDS! Ya know how I hate the Santa Ana winds here in So Cal! I’m glad you’re all safe ;–)
