It’s amazing how time flies! It wasn’t too many years ago that I did most of my grocery shopping on Saturdays. When my first wife, Elizabeth, became too ill to do the shopping, I would buy groceries on Saturday mornings since I didn’t have to work then. I continued to do my grocery shopping on Saturdays after Elizabeth died.
Now Betsy and I do our grocery shopping on Wednesday. Why, you ask? Because our local Kroger store gives senior citizens a discount on Wednesday. And if that’s not enough incentive, they also provide FREE COFFEE to seniors.
But recently there has been a change. It wasn’t all that long ago that I got my feelings hurt if the checkout person asked ‘Do you qualify for the senior discount?’. Now that same question makes me feel pretty good!!!
I’d like to think that I don’t look as old as a majority of the people in the store on Wednesdays, but perhaps I’m just indulging in wishful thinking. I guess I might as well admit that I’m now one of those ‘old folks’. But there is a bright side — on Wednesdays the store plays Big Band music over their sound system. That’s a big improvement over other days of the week!!

I wish our store gave senior discounts–I would be right in line. We all look wonderful–except for those ‘old folks’ over there. hahaha!!!

Hi George,
Sometimes when we stop by McDonald’s for a quick sandwich my husband says ‘with all the old folks’. I have to look at him and laugh and remind him we are those old folks too. 🙂
I’ll quickly tell you when I visited my daughter’s workplace last week with her girls one of her coworkers asked if I was her sister. You have to know that made my day for sure!
As active as you and Betsy are I think you two will be forever young.

I’m smiling 🙂 I remember the first time I was given a senior discount and I wasn’t a senior and how insulted I was! Now, I’ll take anything they give me and smile happily. Three cheers for “senior cokes” at Burger King! 38 cents!

Wow George! Your Kroger sounds like a happening place. Big band music and free coffee? Who wouldn’t want to shop there? Personally I dislike grocery shopping a lot but a store like that would make it a little more enjoyable.

I remember how horrified I was when I turned 50 that AARP would dare send me info! I was beside myself. But I keep thinking that 50 (ish) is the new 30 and so on and so forth! But seriously the store you shop in sounds wonderful and I would take advantage of the free coffee and the music.

I am with you – any discount is a good discount – must check when the next seniors day at Zellers is – they only do the first Monday of the month, so it requires planning!

I sometimes go to Kroger on Wednesday to get the discount, but the store is really packed on Wednesday and I just don’t think about going there. I love Kroger. I have the Kroger credit card and they just sent us $50 in kroger cash. It is good in their store, so I get $50 worth of free food.

I think all of us pretend to be younger than we are–or at least try to fool ourselves. I’m convinced I’m not as old as I really am. But I’d pretend to be older for the Big Band music.
