A Perfect Way to Spend a Wintry Evening

Our living room at Christmas time. December 12, 2009.

When I lived in western North Carolina we had a wood-burning stove to supplement the heat in the house.  I was teaching at the time, so I spent much of the summer cutting and splitting wood to use in the stove.  (I was MUCH younger then and had MUCH more energy!).

Years passed and I met my beautiful bride.  When it came time for us to find our dream house, Betsy essentially had one requirement — it had to have a wood-burning fireplace.

So now, many years later, I have to be concerned with firewood.  We now get firewood cut to length, but some of the pieces still need to be split.  So I often spend a chilly day splitting wood; at least that helps keep me warm while I’m working outside.

And I have to admit that there are few things as pleasant as sipping tea in front of a fire on a cold evening.

I so get the need to have a wood burning fireplace…ours…….is not! I had one before I moved here………..one day, again… Just think splitting that wood from time to time is building muscles.

It would be so nice to have a wood burning fire place. I don’t have one but do have a gas fireplace that looks real so I guess that’s the next best thing. No work either, just a flick of the switch.

Wood burning fireplaces are great! Love the way they smell too. We have gas logs. I reckon that’s the next best thing.

Love the little snowflakes floating by…what a cozy spot to sit and enjoy the end of the day in. We have a fireplace but only for emergencies. But there is nothing better than wood heat!

You know that burning wood warms you twice…once when you cut it and then again when you burn it. The smell of woodsmoke is one of my favorite things on earth.

Looks cozy and festive! I’m with you and Betsy … there’s nothing quite like a wood burning fireplace and even here in Southern California, I use mine frequently during the winter … just because 😉
    Hugs and blessings,
