Watery Wednesday # 96: Unicoi Falls

Unicoi Falls, Cherokee National Forest, Tennessee. October 15, 2010.

This is my post for Watery Wednesday.  To see more of our beautiful watery world, or to join and post your own pictures to share, click HERE.

I’ve mentioned before that Betsy and I like to take the back roads when we travel, especially when we’re traveling through the mountains.  We usually travel the speed limit so the co-pilot has time to look around.

Many — if not most — Tennessee roads through the mountains have turnouts at fairly regular intervals.  That’s a good thing and we take advantage of them fairly often.

Last October we were traveling in the Cherokee National Forest in eastern Tennessee, when Betsy spotted Unicoi Falls as we rounded a curve.  There wasn’t anything I could do about it at that moment, but I spotted a turnout just ahead.  I pulled over and walked back to get this picture.

I realize there are times when a person has to take the Interstate.  But when possible — slow down, take a back road and enjoy the scenery!

That’s a great photo and there was a lot of water coming over the rocks that day.

    Sweet waterfall.
I seem to spend more time on the back roads than the freeways. I agree slow down and enjoy. MB

Whenever I’m driving and I’m not in a hurry to get from point A to B, I prefer the backroads more than the freeways whenever that is possible.

I like traveling the back roads too. So much more interesting than just zooming down the interstate.
    Beautiful photo!!

That’s the only way to travel really! Beautiful waterfalls — I kind of “collect” waterfalls as we travel — would love to add this one sometime. Great pictures on your blog — I scrolled down a bit.

I much prefer roads that are not interstate and try to stay off them as much as possible. look how much beauty we miss by driving with all the fast cars out there. I love sight seeing.

  12. Rose Says:

We love taking back roads…sometimes if it is a dr’s appt or something we have to be at at a certain time, we take the interstate or major highway, but come home on the back roads.

  13. Ginny Hartzler Says:

Did Betsy get to get out of the car and enjoy it, or was there just no place to park safely? I always prefer taking the back roads to the interstste, unless we are in a hurry. Much more beautiful scenery, and ususlly lots of photo ops!

  14. Sey Says:

I love the last paragraph George. Sometimes, the beautiful things are seen in the least expected place.

  15. Ruth Hiebrt Says:

I just booked a ticket to escape the cold here to see your waterfall. I love all the pounding water.

  17. Pam Says:

I agree George. I always like taking the scenic route too. You get to see the real beauty of the area your traveling through and not just the highway.

  18. Mary Says:

This one is very pretty! I like backroads, too. Highways are find when you are in a hurry, but for photo trips, I’d rather go the back way.
