Down Memory Lane: Fort George

When Betsy and I visited Niagara Falls in 2002, we were able to take in sites other than the falls themselves.  One of the places we visited was Fort George National Historical Site near Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario.

Fort George served as headquarters for the Centre Division of the British Army during the War of 1812.  The fort was destroyed by American artillery fire and captured by the United States in May, 1813, during the Battle of Fort George.  The United States held the fort until December, 1813, when it was recaptured by the British.  After the war the fort was partially rebuilt, but was later abandoned in favor of more strategic installations at Fort Mississauga and Butler’s Barracks.

The original plans of the Royal Engineers guided the reconstruction of Fort George as a National Historic Site in the 1930’s.

The map above shows the location of Fort George on the United States-Canadian border.

Thank you for sharing. I have visited the falls themselves but not the surrounding sites. We would love to visit the fort. Your collage is wonderful.

Very interesting post – thanks for sharing! Can’t recall if we saw that when we were at the Falls. We had our kids with us and some things have become a blur, lol!

Love the history and your photos, George! Thanks for sharing them both! With all the traveling I have done, I haven’t spent any time in this part of our world and would love to visit there, but your photos are the next best thing! Have a great weekend!

How cool, George, you have your very own fort. with a moat and everything. Now you and Betsy can go in there, pull up the drawbridge, and escape from the world. Be sure to dismiss your soldiers first!

We have visited Niagara-on-the-Lake a few times. I hope to return sometime this year. I think we saw the monument with info on Fort George; however, we didn’t visit Fort George proper. We’ll have to check that out next time we visit.

I had never heard of that place. It sounds interesting and if we ever make it to Niagara Falls I have to remember to visit it.

Oh dear, having an “own” fort – Fort George, is great.

We neither have visited it, although in 1992 we visited Niagara Falls.

I loved the short history of You told. As a postcard, it is very beautiful.
