While Betsy and I were in the Italian Garden at Biltmore, I was photographing water lilies when this dragonfly started flying around the blossoms I was trying to photograph. When I moved to a different flower, it also moved. I didn’t have the proper lens to get macro of the dragonfly, but I liked the way the wings looked in the sunlight, so I got the picture above.
A little later I got him in a better pose. I haven’t had much experience capturing critters like these, but I did like the way these pictures turned out. I may have to try this again with the proper lens.

I love dragonflies. Except when I run into a large kamikaze one while riding my bike! I had a head-on collision with a huge one a couple of years ago – direct hit to my nose. Hurt like crazy!!

They kind of define ‘gossamer’, don’t you think? I’ve noticed quite a few around here this summer.

I agree with Kathy his wings do indeed define “gossamer”! What a delightful capture, George, and not an easy one to get, but you did a great job! Have a wonderful day!

I really like the second shot. My son just found one “shedding” it’s exoskeleton. I had no idea.

These are great! I find that dragonflies often like to sit on the same spot. If you find their resting place, you can get lots of photos of them.

George, it took me forever to be able to capture them as I have so I know how hard this was to get. I think you did quite well.
I enlarged that first shot and my mouth dropped. Loved the colors you caught in the wings! It seemed like a lovely fairytale like moment. I think it is beautiful!!
