There are advantages to driving in the mountains early on a foggy, misty mountains. We left Skyland Resort on such a morning to make our way home on our Thanksgiving trip. We had to drive north along Skyline Drive to get to an exit from the Shenandoah National Forest.
We came upon this scene at the Hemlock Springs Overlook. The fog had lifted in our immediate vicinity, but much of the valley below was still cloud-covered. A few peaks were just beginning to show themselves above the clouds.
I liked this picture so much that I wanted to see what it looked like as a black and white photo. I like this version just as much and decided to share it with you as well.

The fog laying in the valleys always makes for a pretty shot from above it.

Well, you know a beautiful spot when you see it. My husband has hiked the AT and has walked thought Shenandoah National Park many times. We go there frequently as we live close by in Lexington, VA. I sister live in Old Hickory and then Chattoanooga until she died…and I have relatives in Nashville. T’s a small word when one is a blogger. So glad you enjoyed the Skyline Drive as it is a very special ride. You shot is awesome. genie

I do love the fog — not to drive in, but it is beautiful and adds a sense of mystery to the landscape! Hope you and Betsy have a great weekend, George! Enjoy!

The fog in the valley does make a beautiful picture. Both the color photo and the b & w one are lovely. We live near a narrow river valley and occasionally see the fog sitting low in the valley as we come down the mountain from our home. Pine trees stick up through the fog, giving an unusual look to the whole valley.

It is a gorgeous picture, George! I still like the color better, but it’s fun to see what pictures look like different ways.

I really like those pictures. I have always loved pictures where there are layers of mountains.

I actually prefer the black-and-white. But it is lovely either way.

Thanks for sharing both versions of the photo. I’m often surprised at how good things look in B&W. If you have time, check out my Skywatch post. I converted a few of my pics to B&W, and I actually like them a lot better than the originals!

The blue version is definitely my favorite (probably because blue is my favorite color). Stunning!
