Betsy and I live in a small Tennessee town, so we don’t have much experience with beggars. But as we drove along the Wildlife Loop in South Dakota’s Custer State Park, we encountered a whole herd of them. As you can see from the photo above, they were quite brazen about begging for food.

We tried to identify the ringleader, but we didn’t have much success. This character was definitely one of the larger beggars, and the others showed him a great deal of deference.

Aren’t they cute? When we were there we didn’t get to see them. I love their sweet darling faces!

They’ve done this for years! I remember driving through here as a child. There was a lady in a car behind us parked and sitting in the middle of her front seat screaming because she had a donkey on each side with its head in her front windows.

At least they are not human beings begging for a living. I might not be pitiful of our beggars, but those you encountered look they really need help. what did you give them?

They can feed on grass, can’t they? So they are begging for fruit
and other human food. In the New Forest in the south of England we were not allowed to feed the animals, especially the horses were the greatest beggars. When I was cooking behind the tent they came and looked over my shoulder what I was doing. It was at least scary! They could kick you if they were dissatisfied.

Too funny! Such eyes. I have a friend who lives in a very isolated town in Nevada and the wild Burros there are descendants of the old prospectors burros. They just roam around. MB

I am willing to believe the only reason you refused them is that you were unprepared, and had nothing to give them…
