Strawberry Candy

Strawberry Candy Daylily, Fairfield Glade. June, 2008.

Several days ago my friend Mildred posted about strawberries on her site, http://nalleyvalley.blogspot.com/.  You can read her strawberry post HERE.

In her blog Mildred talked about eating strawberries and she gave a couple of recipes.  But at the end of her post she had a picture of a daylily, “Strawberry Fields Forever”.  With a name like that, it certainly fit the theme of her post.  But we have another daylily that would fit Mildred’s theme — Strawberry Candy, pictured above.

We have several daylilies in our yard and we really enjoy them.  In many ways daylilies are a perfect perennial because they are available in a wide variety of colors, shapes and sizes.  They are also very easy to grow and require very little care.

Each blossom on a daylily lasts for a single day (hence the name).  But there are usually many flower buds on each daylily flower stalk, and  many stalks in each clump of plants.  So the flowering period of any one clump is often several weeks.  In addition to this daylilies are vigorous growers growers and multiply quite quickly.

We only had one clump of Strawberry Candy last summer.  We’re looking forward to many more in the years ahead.

Good Morning George: The Strawberry Candy daylily is so very pretty!
Like you, I love that daylilies are easy to grow, even in the drought of the last few years. In one of my very first posts, I mention that mother and I spent hours purchasing daylily varieties that carried the name of beloved ancestors. It was a lot of fun pouring through catalogs looking for names like, Ida & Lassie! I even found a “Sister Mildred!” You and Betsy should search for two with your names. Thanks for the link to my post – I appreciate it and hope you and Betsy have a great weekend.

Mildred, I think I’ll take you up on that idea about looking for daylilies that have our name. But I must say that I found Betsy an iris named ‘Tennessee Vol’ and got that for her.

Oooooo….this is a lovely one! I love daylilies and would like to have a lot more. They are very popular in this area and you see lots of them as well as the nice wild ones growing along the ditches. My favorite is a double petaled one.

How pretty! I love daylilies. Here in Northern Virginia they’ve got them planted all along the roads leading into DC, and when they bloom every year, it’s really a gorgeous sight. I didn’t realize that the blooms only last a day – always wondered why they were called “daylily.” Thanks for the botany lesson. And have a great weekend!

BEAUTIFUL colors here! I’m still waiting for my Day Lilies to bloom one of these days to see what color they are. A friend gave me bulbs a year or so ago and I planted them on faith.
    Hugs and blessings,
