Skywatch Friday # 28

North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. May, 2006.

North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. May, 2006.

Although today was warmer here on the Plateau of Tennessee — we actually got above freezing for a couple of hours — I still felt led to celebrate Skywatch Friday with memories of warmer weather.

The picture above was taken in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, in May, 2006.  We were on the beach in front of Cherry Grove Manor when the clear, deep blue skies behind the manor and palmetto trees got my attention.  We’re accustomed to beautiful skies when we go to the beach, but I don’t think we’ve ever seen a prettier sky.

The Cherry Grove Manor was probably our favorite place to stay at the beach, primarily because it was small and comfortable.  Unfortunately it is no longer there.  It was torn down in early 2007 to make room for a high rise condo.  When we were at the beach last year we went past the site and there was only a small beach access walkway and one tree left from the manor.  It was rather sad.  The condo was under construction in May, 2008, but I don’t know if it has been finished or not.  Perhaps we’ll find out when we go to the beach this year.

Hope the beach remains comfortable! The row of palm heads against the blue sky looks good!

  3. Tina Says:

A beautiful photo. It is sad when a place you visited and liked falls to the developers! The nice thing still have the photos and the memories that go with it!

  4. Kathy Says:

Have you noticed not as many snow pictures this week? I think everybody is ready for warmer weather. Great shot. You know with the housing market being as bad as it is why contractors want to build expensive condo’s that hardly anyone will be able to afford.

Let’s all head for the beach!

Oh, I hate it when that happens! But I’m still enjoying the photo of the trees against the sky, and the reminder that it will be warm again someday.

  8. Your EG Tour Guide Says:

Nothing like blue skies and palm trees to make me want to spend time in a warmer clime!

  9. Rambling Woods Says:

We are all trying to remind ourselves of warmer weather, and beach days. It will be here soon (hopefully).

Very nice sky. I love Myrtle Beach.

  13. Ms Hays Says:

I love palms against a blue blue sky! Nice Sky Watch Friday shot!!!

  14. Fishing Guy Says:

George: Sometimes it is hard to not look back to summer. You will get some neat winter skies real soon.

  15. Louise Says:

You go to the beach every year?! How lucky you are!

  16. Linnea Says:

That sky looks just like Californian sky. Too bad the place was torn down. That is what “progress” does. Thanks for visiting my SWF shot.

  17. Tammie Says:

Nice that you had a wonderful time there, when it was there. Memories is sometimes all we have. That is one mighty blue sky!

  18. Grammy Says:

    Hi George
I really enjoyed your sky watch photo today. I love the trees.

    Have a great week.

  19. Valkyrien Says:

Beautiful sky behind the palms! And a sad story about the place and beach.
The story gives the picture perspective! Have a nice day! Greetings from Norway!

  20. JLS Hall Says:

What a wonderful blue sky! And such a shame about the lovely palm trees. Good thing you got this beautiful shot while you were able to!

  21. Mildred Says:

What an absolutely fantastic photo George. Always a little sad to lose a favorite place to visit.

  23. Mary Says:

Lovely…a very deep blue. The fact that you took a photo and remember the details shows how wonderful the sky was on that day. It looks like a great place and it is a shame they tore it down. Progress is so often not really progress in my opinion…..just more urban sprawl for those who can afford luxury.

  24. Susie Says:

It’s really sad to see how new developments come in and take away the great places to stay on the beach. We use to visit Panama City Beach alot and found the same thing happening there.

  25. Carla Says:

Very pretty. I like the palm trees against that blue sky.

It’s a shame that development often ruins some of these beautiful places. In the 70s, my parents retired to Gulf Shores, Alabama. The beaches are gorgeous there…but I think for some people they have been ruined by all the high-rise condos.

  26. Hilda Says:

That’s so sad! Cherry Grove Manor looks like it was a wonderful place for a quiet vacation.

  27. imac Says:

Sure is a beautiful Blue sky Gearge.

  28. Carletta Says:

    Hi George,
The sky is certainly a great blue in your photo. Those Carolina skies can be awfully pretty.
When we lived in Virginia we used to visit Nags Head a lot. I loved it there. It was quaint but then progress came along and those neat little vacation places to stay gave way to the modern high rises. Change – we live with it, but we don’t have to like it. 🙂

  29. 2sweetnsaxy Says:

That’s a great deep blue. With those palm trees in front it looks like a California sky. 🙂

  30. Gill Says:

love the Carolina’s, just don’t like Myrtle Beach to over commericialized for me…….but each to their own right?

I wasn’t sure if you wanted a letter for that quiz thing? If you do your letter is “D”, if you don’t want to participate, just ignore it.

  31. Tarolino, Finland Says:

Palms and blue skies go together like flowers and bees. What an absolute pity this wonderful place was taken down for just another inpersonal construction. Things like that always make me sad.

  32. Darla Says:

I used to live in Goosecreek, S.C.. Have family all over S.C. Nice photo.

  33. Readerwil Says:

Such a pity that perfectly good and comfortable building are taken down to make place for ugly high blocks of flats. The sky is very beautiful.

  34. Sherrie Says:

    Hi George,
It looks very relaxing there! Sorry to hear they tore the place down. Makes you wonder if progress is worth it! Thanks for stopping by my place. Have a great day!!

  35. Antigoni Says:

I made a comment for your post about the woodpile but i can’t find it in your comments.

  36. sharon Says:

We’re pretty spoiled here in Florida with our nice winter weather but we miss out on all the beautiful snow. I guess you always want what you don’t have. Happy Skywatch Friday:)

  37. Arija Says:

Tempus fugit! In the name of ‘progress’ a great deal of destructioon has been perpetrated. It is sad when favurite places and landmarks vanish giving way to ugliness and greed.

  38. happilyretired Says:

Nifty shot of palm trees against a beautiful blue skies … reminds me of MY neck of the universe … though we’ve had cloudier skies the past few days and much needed rain showers too ;–)
    Hugs and blessings,

  39. Will Says:

I know this was posted years ago but do you happen to have anymore photos of cherry grove manor? I vacationed there as a kid and have been desperate to find photos of it recently
