This is my post for the My World meme. It is hosted by Klaus, Ivar, Sandy, Wren, Louise and Fishing Guy. Last week there were at least 74 people sharing their worlds (problems with Mr. Linky). To see more of our world or to join and share your part of the world, click HERE.
The picture above was taken in 2000 of the old Lake County Courthouse in Crown Point, Indiana. The courthouse was built in 1878 and served as the seat of the county government during the time I lived in Crown Point.
A new courthouse was built in 1970s and for a while it seemed that the old courthouse would be torn down in order to create a parking lot. But a group of citizens succeeded in getting the courthouse listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and the building was saved. It now contains shops and a museum.
At the bottom of the picture you can see the a tablet containing the Ten Commandments. The tablet used to be vertical, but was broken off its pedestal by vandals. The tablet was then preserved in this position and is still there.

I am happy to read that this magnificent house was not torned down! And for a parking lot!? Hmf…. Sometimes I wonder about politicians! They are the same all over the world – after some years in office!
A beautiful building as this should be the pride of the town! Great job done by the citizens!

I’m glad the court house was saved – lovely photo. And I love that Wildfire rose – beautiful.

Very interesting. See what good happens when you get a group of good people together…the citizens, not the vandals! ;0

I guess the tablets are safer on the ground, but I’m not too sure about pedestrians and tourists who don’t notice it immediately! 😉
Glad to hear community members managed to save it. In the end, I’d rather that old buildings get used as shops, restaurants or apartments than having them demolished and losing a part of the town’s history.

Marvelous shot of a lovely old building! So glad that it was saved and restored — hate to lose historical buildings and places and it happens all too frequently. Thanks, George, for sharing a slice of your world! Have a great week!

That’s what I like to see people power. We saved the cottage hospital here 5 years ago. Good for everyone to save a wonderful building make community use of

I love old buildings and this is a great looking one. It sure would have been a shame to tear it down for a parking lot. Glad it was saved!!!

I am so glad they saved the courthouse–it looks like a beautiful building. I would love to go shopping in a place like that. And I am not much of a shopper.
