Last Friday Betsy and I got up before dawn so we could visit the Smoky Mountains in search of some color. Although we had had some rain and many clouds on Thursday, the weatherman said Friday would be beautiful with clearing skies. So we took the chance and decided to make the drive.
I’m glad we did. It was cloudy at daylight, but we were treated to the sight of the sun breaking through the clouds over Gatlinburg while at an overlook above the city. What a great way to start the day!

The Smoky Mountains on the North Carolina side of the park along Newfound Gap Road. October 14, 2011.
We drove up the mountain to Newfound Gap on the Tennessee-North Carolina border, and then down the mountain into North Carolina. A few miles past the Gap we stopped at an overlook to enjoy this fantastic view.
When I lived in North Carolina we would say that God must have been a Tarheel because He made the sky Carolina Blue. But Tennessee has some beautiful blue skies as well. I captured this picture on the Tennessee side of Newfound Gap as we were heading back home.

How beautiful! That first one is amazing, with the rays of sunlight coming through the clouds and the layering of mountains. Love it!

Lovely! I laughed when I saw yours and Betsy’s titles side by side on my sidebar. Did you write them at the same time? Fall or Autumn…..do we choose which to call it based on where we grew up? I guess I say “fall” most of the time, but “autumn” has such a nice poetic sound.

Gorgeous Fall photos! We mere humans can hardly take in all the beauty. The colors were in full show in parts of Alaska, too, when I was there. I love our Fall colors!
Blessings!

That IS a beautiful blue sky, esp in contrast to the gorgeous fall colors, but the white puffy clouds and a blue sky is my fave… I love taking pics on those days! =)
happy week, George

Those really are stunning scenic shots George. You live in such a beautiful part of our country, especially with autumn approaching. It’s still pretty “boring” round here, weatherwise and colorwise! Enjoy the week!

WOW George!! Your 1st picture is simply GORGEOUS!! I LOVE it!! The others are beautiful and the colors of the trees just make your mouth fall to the floor! 😉 Really, they are stunning!
When I was a little girl my Nana lived in Carthage, MO and they always had gorgeous trees in the fall. Nana would allow me to go pick some leaves and come in and we would iron them in some wax paper. Such good memories 🙂

Terrific photos. Although photos with fall colors are beautiful, I love most the first photo. It is awesome and there is something “biblical” in it.

George, I love the crepuscular rays in that first shot, and the layers and layers of hills! And then the breath-taking colours in the other shots!
