This is my post for the Our World meme.  This meme is a second generation of My World Tuesday created by Klaus Peter and is hosted by five wonderful ladies.  To learn more about our world or to join and share your part of the world, click HERE.

Earlier this month we went Knoxville to see a high school football game.  Betsy’s grandson, is a drummer in his high school band.  That’s Landon in the middle in the picture above.

Both of my children were in the band during their high school years, so it was interesting to see how the pre-game activities have changed since my kids were in school.

Bearden Bulldog banner at the game. October 6, 2011.

Things got started with a group of students bring a large banner out to midfield.

Cheerleaders leading the team out onto the field.

The cheerleaders burst through the banner . . .

The football team arrives on the field. October 6, 2011.

. . . followed by the football team.

Fireworks welcome the team onto the field. Bearden High School, Knoxville, Tennessee. October 6, 2011.

The fireworks reminded me of an NFL playoff game.  But everyone (except perhaps the visiting team) seemed to enjoy the excitement and soon it was time to play football.

Carrying those drums while playing is no easy feat for Betsy’s grandson. You two must have been quite proud of him.

My granddaughter played a single mid-sized drum last year in marching band and the flute the year before that. We loved watching her and the band preform.

    be well and happy George,
    Pam

what you describe is a LOT different than the last football game i went to in 1962. i have seen some of this on TV. big changes for sure.

  3. Ginny Hartzler Says:

The uniforms are sure more informal, but still really nice. Growing up, Phil was not allowed to learn to play any instrument that could be played in band, because no extra curricular activities of any kind were allowed! So he got stuck with accordion.

Much excitement in the air at these games. Our 15 year old is in her High School Marching band, she plays the flute.

Wonderful shots. Music is in the family gene.

That’s excellent series on the football teams. One of my cousin is also in our state football team. Goof luck to Landon 🙂

I love the added touch of fireworks, how cool! And, I notice they are using breakaway banners. Back in the day, ours were paper and took a lot of extra time and effort. I like the idea of nice, reusable ones!

Ah, does bring back memories, not only of when my kids were young, but when I was — WOW didn’t realize I could remember that far back!!! This was always a fun time of year! Landon looks like a great drummer!! Hope your week is going well, George! Enjoy!

I like the artwork of the mascot, bulldog. I would be really excited to see the pregame festivities, but am afraid the mechanics of the game is lost on me. Oh and my heart goes to baseball.

I still winces when someone gets tackled. But when I’m at someone’s house and the game is on tv I watch with them and learn the game little by little.

I do know that the bay area’s 2 teams, raiders and 49ers are playing well. I listen to sports radio sometimes 🙂

How wonderful for you both to get to see Landon in action!!!
    Go Bulldogs!!!

  12. Karin Says:

So great you could get to see the game and the band and especially be so proud of Landon! It’s always more fun if someone we know is participating!

  13. Rose Says:

I bet you had a lot of fun watching all the things going on!

  14. Tootie Says:

My goodness George, that boy must be an awesome drummer to carry so many drums! I think they must be very heavy too. I’m sure he was very happy to have you two there.

I shared with Betsy that my niece is on the drumline. She is in 8th grade and absolutely LOVES it!! Our current Senior drumline is just out of this world! They all are sooo close too! They only have 1 girl on their line but in the 8th grade there are two girls. My niece is one and Jantzen’s girlfriend is the other! I really hope they stay with it because it is such a wonderful experience.

Kids in the band are dedicated like no other! How proud you all must be of Landon! I just LOVE marching bands! My favorite is …the drumline! lol ~ Have you & Betsy ever seen that movie titled “Drumline”? It has some amazing drumming in it for sure!
