Apple, what have you done?

As most of you know, I’m a big fan of Apple products.  My first personal computer was an AppleII.  I’ve worked with Macintosh computers from just about the time they were introduced, and am now on my fourth iMac computer.

I also have a couple of iPods and an iPad.  I really do like Apple products.

Cumberland Falls, Cumberland Falls State Park, Kentucky. June 23, 2005.

There is one area, however, in which I’m fed up with Apple, and that is their online hosting services.  Apple first offered online hosting of photos and files with Home Page, and I uploaded many pictures to Home Page to share them with family and friends.

Elk River Falls, Elk Park, North Carolina. February 15, 2008.

After a couple of years Home Page went away with its place taken by Mobile Me.  Fortunately Apple provided an easy way to move to Mobile Me, and that’s what I did.  Over the past five years I’ve uploaded many more photos to Mobile Me.  I really liked that service.

Looking Glass Falls, Pisgah National Forest, North Carolina. May 23, 2002

Mobile Me went away on June 30, and there is nothing from Apple to replace it.  Fortunately Apple did provide plenty of advance notice, but that was about all.  So I decided to create my own site completely independent of anything Apple does.  For the past few months I’ve been working to set up the site and move pictures and files to it.

Lower Whitewater Falls, Sapphire, North Carolina. November 9, 2006.

I’ve finished moving our waterfall collection.  It currently contains the 452 waterfalls that I’ve cataloged to date.  I’ll add more waterfalls as I get my pictures organized.  If you would like to visit our waterfall collection, you can do so HERE.

North River Falls, Tellico Plains, Tennessee. June 18, 2010.

I’m in the process of moving other pictures and files to my site, and I’ll let you know as they are posted.

I’m a huge Mac fan, but don’t know anything about Homepage, or Mobile Me. Zip, zilch, nada. I’m going to have to bookmark your collection, so I can share it with hubby!

    Hello George!
In Poland there are 35 degrees Celsius heat.
    Your photos fantastically cool.
As usual, lovely post and beautiful pictures.

Love the waterfall pictures. I guess Apple is not perfect as many of us would like to believe. I am an ardent Apple follower and hope they never change their products to be less than what the are today.

I’ve never used any of the hosting services either….but I will look into it. I can’t believe they left you hanging like that; rude!
    Lovely photos George.

  5. diane Says:

That must have been annoying. I have never used any of the hosting sites even though I use apple. I used iPhoto and now Aperture to organise photos. I store them on a separate hard drive and CD’s. Great waterfall shots. I must visit your site.

  6. MadSnapper Says:

do you keep all your photos on an external hard drive? i hope so, i don’t keep any of my photos on any thing on the web other than my blog. i have maybe 100,000 photos on 2 external hard drives. i used to have a website that i posted them on, but found no one looked at it but me and a few friends if i made them. it was a 5 per month site, but then when i quit paying it goes away, just like yours.

  7. Sylvia Kirkwood Says:

I didn’t know about the Apple sites either! I’m sure that was annoying!! Glad you’ve set up your own site as I particularly love your water shots! Thanks for the info!!

Your waterfall photos are awesome. These transitions are a pain but it’ll be nice to have them in a place you can control. Hope the change goes smoothly!

I love Apple too. I’ve never used their photos services though.
I don’t save many pictures anymore though. I like taking the pictures but never seem to go back and look at them.
Your waterfall pictures are all beautiful. I’m going now to check out your whole collection.

Hi George, i missed this post. OMG 452 waterfalls. Are there double entries of photos there? Do you know the real number of individual falls? That is amazing collection. I don’t mind the apple products, i just want the waterfalls, LOL!
