When Betsy and I went to Arkansas earlier this month, we were shocked at the drought conditions in the state.  As we traveled from Memphis to Little Rock we saw many brown fields and lawns.  Even when we traveled north to Fairfield Bay, it was obvious that the state was very dry.

We left Fairfield Bay and headed toward Mountain View, Arkansas, along Highway 9.  We passed over many dry creeks, but then we rounded a bend and saw the scene above.

Ozark Mountains in Arkansas. August 5, 2012.

It was so beautiful  with the mountains, sky, clouds and green trees, that we both said “Stop!”.  So we pulled over to the side of the road and got these pictures of this part of the Ozark Mountains.  The Ozarks of Arkansas were definitely beautiful in spite of the drought.

Yes they are beautiful George, i’ve just been to Betsy’s waterfalls and am so envious with the two of you. I wonder if you toss coins to decide who posts the waterfalls, or maybe alternately you do!

I don’t think the countryside as shown in the two photos looks all that bad.
Ozack rings a bell with me – never been there, I refer to the Ozack Mountains, but wasn’t there in the 70’s/80’s a US airline called Ozack Airlines, I am sure I travelled with them on some part of my trips across the USA??? They were just a commuter like airline, not international or even nation wide for the USA.
    Interesting blog, as always George.
    Cheers

I wasn’t going to bed until I sorted out my travel with Ozack Airlines,
it was from St. Louis, Missouri back to Rochester, Minn.
And that episode of my US travels in the 1980’s, is a very long story.
Nothing like “jogging” the memory box eh?
    Cheers
    Colin.

While I never want a hurricane to hit anyone, I can’t help but hope Isaac keeps to a western track to send some rain their way!

Wonderful captures of a beautiful place, George! I, too, hope they get some rain soon!! It’s even dry here in Seattle — no rain in over 30 days which is really unusual for this area! Lots of fires all over the state! Hope you have a great week!

The lack of rain has sure taken it’s toll on so much of the beautiful scenery. It’s nice this scene was spared!

Definitely beautiful alright. Drought is a terrible thing. we haven’t had any measurably rain since Mid July but not a drought yet. It is very damp and dewy in the mornings and the ground holds the moisture and it is not hot here. So we are thankful. MB.

In-spite of dry season you have managed to get very good shots. Here also it has been dry and it has just started raining at the end of season.

Enjoyed the photos. Can’t imagine a drought at the moment as still clearing up from some flooding earlier in the week. What a world.
