Ozone Falls, Ozone, Tennessee. January 7, 2008.
Betsy had a great idea yesterday. The heavy rains had stopped and, although there were still sprinkles and an occasional snow flurry, she suggested that we go see Ozone Falls.
Ozone Falls is the nearest ‘major’ waterfall to our house. We’ve been there several times — a couple of times when there wasn’t much water going over the falls and once when there was a great deal of snow and ice around the falls.
Yesterday, as the picture above shows, there was a great deal of water going over the falls — much more than we’ve ever seen. But the big surprise for me was something I hadn’t seen before.
A new (for me) small waterfall with Ozone Falls in the background.
I hiked down to the vantage point I’ve visited before, but this time there was enough water in the stream that I could see rapids below the falls. Since there were no leaves on the trees I could see a way to get to the stream below the falls, and so I set off down the side of the cove. I hiked down to the stream below the falls and found a second, smaller fall below the main one as shown in the picture on the right. I had no idea it was there.
Since I was now most of the way down into the cove I decided to go a little more further downstream and found several additional small falls and cascades.
I reluctantly left the stream and started to climb back up out of the cove. For some reason it was much harder climbing up than it was walking down, but I think my new discoveries were worth it.

How beautiful they all are. I like the 2nd one best with the curve of rock. I hope you do a George post as I already know George Washington was a famous person.

What a wonderful discovery! To tell you the truth, I think the smaller falls and rapids are lovelier and much more interesting than the main falls.

Mary, we did have a wonderful time. I like the last two photos better myself. I was doing some experimenting and like the results. And of course the fact that they were unexpected helps as well.

I was wondering if I would be able to go see the other falls, but I guess your comment about the climb out enforced what I knew was probably true.
I would never want to be hiking around Ozone when there was any ice, could slide right off that cliff. Not me!! I am already concerned Jimmy isn’t going to like the surroundings when he sees it. Probably will ask me to promise to never go by myself EVER again.
This shows how much rain we did get. Would love to get there Saturday, but not sure I will make it.

Leedra, I hope you can make it. The hike down to the vantage point for the main falls (my first picture) isn’t bad IF there is no ice. It is steep at the beginning, however.

LOL! It’s always harder going up than down but then that’s about true with everything, isn’t it? I can imagine your excitement at your discovering. That’s how I would feel. These are wonderful shots! WIsh I could see that for myself. What a joy that must have been!

I found your page through Betsy’s page. We visit Gainesboro often but we live in Georgia. Have you ever been to Cumberland Falls near Cookeville? You can do a search for it or look on youtube. It is very pretty and in your neck of the woods.
