A Snow Day

River Hills golf course, Little River, South Carolina. January 25, 2000.

We got caught in some snow and ice on our way home from the grocery snow today.  It got to be interesting for a while, but we made it home safe and sound.  Of course the schools in the county closed early (at 10a.m.) before the bad weather got here.

That got me to thinking — when was the last time I got off because of snow?

I honestly don’t remember missing school because of snow when I was growing up in northern Indiana.  I do remember lots of snow as a youngster, but I also remember snowplows quickly clearing the roads.  I may have missed some days when in elementary school, but I honestly don’t remember any.

I know I didn’t miss any school because of snow while I was in high school.  Although I lived out in the country, the high school was a city school and they NEVER closed.  If the buses didn’t run, I went to school anyway — Dad felt we lived close enough for me to walk.  I got a perfect attendance award when I graduated.

When I went to college almost all students lived on campus — no snow days.  I taught high school in Cleveland, Ohio, after graduating — they always had school.

We had snow when I taught in North Carolina and Ohio, but both of those colleges were resident colleges, so the students were on campus and no snow days.

Now that I think of it, I can think of only one day when I missed work because of snow — January 25, 2000.  What made that day memorable was that at the time I was working at a company in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina!  I was just about to the plant when I heard on the radio that the plant was closed for the day and that no one should try to come in to work since the building would be locked.  So I did what any kid would do — I went home and went out in the snow.  That’s when I took the picture above on the River Hills golf course in Little River, South Carolina.  It was the first snow on the Grand Strand in ten years.

What a wonderful memory and photo. You may be right about schools close more now a days.As I too remember walking in snow up to my knees as a kid. Hope you both are staying warm and safe.

Thanks for visiting my blog. So glad you go some snow.
I just wanted to tell you that I was wrong on the name of the falls. I am so scatter brained sometimes, the name is cummings mill falls. Sorry about that. Have a blessed day.

What a great story George. I remember school be closed a lot where I grew up in Kansas City. Usually not more than 1 day though. I can’t remember when we have had snow here in Tulsa. It’s been awhile. LOL I would proably act like a kid if we had a ton of snow on the ground except I don’t have any decent shoes to wear out in snow.

Growing up near Atlanta, GA we frequently had school closed due to snow. The south is ill equipped for snow removal and usually they just wait on snow and ice to melt on its own! When I got older, my dad would often drop me off at work because he had snow chains for his tires. Beautiful photo today George. Hope you and Betsy find your parents doing well today.

During our 20 years in Wisconsin, I think there were maybe 6 days when work was closed. Here in NC, a prediction of snow closes some offices.

I’m glad you made it home safely. Living Southern Cal I an honestly say our schools never closed on account of snow. 🙂 There are some areas in the mountains that get snow and the highways through the passes might close as well as the schools but I’ve never been close to that.

    Be safe, be careful. 🙂

That looks like a lot of snow for So. Carolina. I was sure your lovely wife enjoyed this day 🙂

A great walk down memory lane with a beautiful winter scene to go with it. I was never lucky enough to have any place (school or work) being closed because of snow. Don’t think that is happening these days either.
I’ve been late because of snow. Digging out the car from underneath 20 cm:s with a meter high wall behind from the plowing takes time and the traffic gets like porridge.

Why don’t you George be the fourth person to do the forth picture of the forth file challenge? You’ve already seen my picture (which is okay but not great quality).

As a teacher George did you not just “Think Snow” for days off! 🙂
    I did!!

Growing up in rural WV we didn’t have days off from school. We lived on a hill and the bus had to go down to the county line and pick up and turn and come back. On slick days we knew he wouldn’t stop going down but would get us coming back up. I can remember snow up to my knees. 🙂
Times change – a little bit of snow and school’s called off.
    Beautiful photo!

That is a beautiful photograph. We did have days off, but I always think the farther south you go, the less prepared to deal with snow people/highway crews are. Lots of schools are closed here today…personally I think it is safer.

I loved reading about your memories George! My hubby was actually sent home yesterday because of the snow. I honestly don’t remember that ever happening before. He was very productive with his time of and took a nap. 😉

Is that why the plant closed too? Even the owners wanted to play in the snow? 🙂
Students and teachers in Manila always get days off because of typhoons. Not us sad office workers though. Bummer…

Beautiful photo! My daughter lives in Texas & even she couldn’t go to work yesterday until lunch time because of the ice on the roads.

It all depends on where you live. I grew up in southern Missouri. We only missed school if it was so deep that nothing could get through. They had plows, but not enough to take care of everything quickly. Here in NM, maybe they have one or two. We miss school at the least threat of snow. My husband is from North Dakota. They NEVER missed school for snow!

What a lovely white winter scene! Here in California I’ve never missed school for snow day … or any reason other than illness … though there were some lovely sunny days I was sorely tempted ;–)
    Hugs and blessings,

We rarely had off from school when I was a kid living in northern NJ. I remember driving on packed snow. People just don’t know how to drive anymore!! The schools here in MD close when there is a hint of bad weather.
