Betsy and I were home for about 12 hours Thursday evening and early this (Friday) morning. That gave us just enough time to repack for Ray’s memorial service and to do a quick post to let you know we survived the first of our quick trips. By the time you read this we will be on the road to Jacksonville, Florida.
As you know, we went to Tallulah Gorge State Park in Georgia to see what the waterfalls looked like when water was released from the dam above the gorge. We hiked a new trail (for us) and the views were wonderful. There was a light rain most of the day, but that didn’t stop us from our quest to enjoy the waterfalls.
Unfortunately about half way through our hike my camera decided to start acting up. For the rest of the hike I could only take wide-angle shots if I could get any at all. That was definitely a bummer, but as Betsy said, that just gives us another excuse to go back.
Now that Betsy has her laptop, I’m hoping Santa will bring me a new camera. I’ve been wanting one with interchangeable lenses so I could get closer to waterfalls we can’t reach on foot. I would also like to be able to get macros of our flowers.
I know many of you are great photographers. I would appreciate any advice you may be able to give me regarding a camera that will fit my needs. Thanks.

Sorrry about your camera…I’m not a great photographer but I have enjoyed my Canon Rebelxti …it does all the work…and I shoot on automatic all the time…I’m determined to learn how to use it more effectively soon.

Sorry about your camera George. It’s not much fun when things like that happen. My camera is a Canon power shot A590. I’m not sure they still make it since they discontinue them so fast. I love it tho. Love the macro setting and it can change out lenses but I don’t have any others. It does have a zoom on it tho.

My goodness, George, don’t overdo it – you have to be careful & safe!

Grrrrr!!! That’s how I feel when my camera acts up–but it rights itself and I dumbly go on. I have a Canon Power shot SX10. I really like it. I had a Canon Power shot SX100 and this one is the next step up. Bigger and you can’t just slip it in your pocket but small enough to carry in your hand.

Hi George, Sorry to hear of your camera, (glad you enjoyed your trip tho, with great shots)
Cameras – I guess its what you are happy with, Im happy with my Nickons and lens that I have.
Just remember its not the camera that takes the photo – its the photographer.lol.
It does help tho – to have an SLR with a selection of Lens.
Good luck with your choice.

Beautiful view even though it’s not what you were hoping for. It’s frustrating when our cameras don’t cooperate. I love my Nikon D60 but find my Tamron 28-300mm lens frustrating at times because (although it’s supposedly compatible with my camera) it often messes up and refuses to cooperate with some of the settings I want to use. My sister bought the Nikon 18-200mm lens and doesn’t run into the same problems that I do. Good luck with Santa ;–)
Hugs and blessings,

Not much help here. I have a Nikon D50 which isn’t made anymore. I did look at newer Nikons, but they don’t do any more of what I want to do and the D60 is not nearly as good a camera. I have a 70-300mm lens that I use for birds. If you get anything stronger than 300mm you are likely to need a tripod.
I recommend you go to a good camera store where they will let you “play” with several cameras. Because they are digital, you can actually take photographs in the camera shop. I do not have a digiscope since my Nikon is too heavy to use with one, but a lot of people love them for distance shots.

George: Now all you have to do is hope that Betsy reads your blog.

Sorry about the camera, but I’m glad it didn’t totally give up because this is gorgeous! Wish I could give you some advise, but you know me and my itsy-bitsy camera! 😉

I have a Nikon D80. It takes nice pictures, but it is big and heavy. If you go walking on trails, I would not recommend getting a big camera. I also just got a Canon powershot, it is small and fits in my pocket. I take it with me all the time and I always use it. I just use my Nikon for home shots, but if I am hiking or just going to a city, I use the small Canon. If you want a big lens, those things are heavy too.

I hate to hear of any trouble like this…as for cameras, there is a place called Digital Preview and you can go there and compare all the cameras and a lot of the lenses.
