Yesterday Betsy and I visited our friends Judy and Charlie, who were camping at Cades Cove in the Smokies.  Judy and Charlie camp there every year, and Betsy and I usually go over to visit with them at least one day.  We sit around a campfire (it’s been cool in the mountains) and get caught up on what each couple has been doing since the last time we got together.

We talked so much yesterday that we didn’t have time for a hike, so the best Betsy and I could do was drive to the beginning of the Cades Cove loop and get a few pictures.  That’s where the picture above was taken.

Celebrating our monthaversary at Cafe Uno, Maryville, Tennessee. July 23, 2009.

Yesterday was our 97th ‘monthaversary’.  We decided since we met so late in life we would celebrate our wedding ‘monthaversary’ as well as the anniversary.  Since it was on the way home, we decided to stop at Uno’s for a deep dish Chicago pizza.  It had been quite some time since we had one and that seemed like a great way to end a special day.

Skywatch # 53: Evening Sky in North Carolina

Last Friday evening we were at Mountain Air, North Carolina, enjoying a delicious meal prepared by my son and his girlfriend.  We were sitting on the deck of the condo when the sky slowly changed color after the sun set.

I couldn’t get around the trees in the foreground, but I did manage to capture the red afterglow.

If you don’t like Tennessee weather, wait a while — it will change.  This picture was taken from our front yard last week.  It was a day of clear blue skies, high fluffy white clouds and threatening rain clouds.  And that was just in the afternoon!

Fishing Guy and his wife. July 9, 2009

One of the members of the Skywatch team is Fishing Guy.  Fishing Guy was one of the first bloggers I came across when I moved to Blogger.  Tom (Fishing Guy) lives in Kent, Ohio, which is not far from Cleveland, where i used to teach.

Tom and his wife spent a some time in Nashville earlier this week and stopped by Crossville on their way home.  Betsy and I met them for lunch at the Cracker Barrel in town and had a wonderful time getting to know each other.  It’s so wonderful to be able to meet in person people you’ve gotten to know through the blogsphere.

If you’re in Tennessee please let us know so we can meet you as well.

As we were getting ready to come home from our anniversary trip I noticed the white clouds forming between the blue sky and green trees in Dillard, Georgia.  I just had to try and capture that pretty sight and since this is the beginning of the Fourth of July weekend, the American flag makes the picture even more appropriate for this particular Skywatch Friday.

I realize summer doesn’t officially arrive until Sunday, but we’ve had typical summer weather up here on the Plateau.  The mornings start out sunny and clear — a perfect day.  In the afternoons the clouds start rolling in.  Sometimes we get rain; sometimes we only get more clouds.

This picture was taken in our front yard earlier this week.  A little of the blue sky remains, but the clouds are definitely on the way.  We didn’t get any rain that day.

While we were in Arkansas in March, Betsy and I visited Mount Magazine State Park on a dreary rainy day.  Mount Magazine has many wonderful views, several good hiking trails which we enjoy, and a wonderful restaurant that serves delicious lunches.

As we were getting ready to head back down the mountain we stopped at an overlook of the Petit Jean River Valley.  The sky was gray and dull looking, but there were clouds rolling over the mountains on the other side of the valley.  Even though the sky is indistinct, I like this picture anyway.

Betsy and I visited our friends Judy and Charlie last week in the mountains of North Carolina.  It rained fairly hard the first afternoon we were there, but it cleared up in the early evening.  That’s when I got the picture above.  The sky was clearing but there were still clouds over the mountains and fog was rising from the valley below the cabin.

Last week I posted a picture of a moonrise over the ocean at the beach while we were on vacation.  We were treated to a beautiful show for three nights, and of course I took more than one picture.  I couldn’t resist posting another picture of the moon over the ocean.  We were enthralled by the reflection on the water, which you can better see by enlarging the photo above.

There were so many nice things about our vacation at the beach that it’s hard to pick the one thing that stands out.  I’ve already mentioned the beach and the seafood and Betsy talked about some of the waterfalls we saw to and from the beach.

But one very special thing was the show Mother Nature put on for us the last two nights we were at the beach.  We had a beautiful moonrise right opposite the balcony of our room.  The moon and the reflection on the ocean were absolutely gorgeous.

Of course I didn’t have a tripod with me, so the picture above is not as good as it could be.  Still, it’s a nice reminder of a couple of special evenings.

I’ve posted another picture of the moon over the ocean on my photo blog, Photos by Senior Hiker.  You can see it by clicking HERE.

The picture above was taken on Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.  I honestly don’t know what I like most about this picture — the sky, the beach, or the ocean.

I selected this picture because Betsy and I are getting ready to head back there for a week.  We try to get there each year, and although we’ve been on the road quite a bit this year, we decided to go back.  The beach is nice, but the seafood is irresistible!  Fortunately our yard and garden can get along without us for a few days.

I plan on doing a post tomorrow (Saturday) morning, but then we’ll be away from our computers for a week.
