This is my post for Watery Wednesday, a weekly meme created and hosted by 2sweetnsaxy of Eyes Mind Heart.  To see more of our beautiful watery world, or to join and post your pictures, click HERE.

Betsy and I enjoyed our stay in Cosby last weekend.  We had some rain while we were there, but not enough to keep us from hiking and exploring a part of the Smokies we haven’t visited as often as we have this side of the park.  The rain had the advantage of keeping the water flows relatively high, which we thoroughly enjoy.

The picture above, which can be enlarged, was taken in the Greenbrier section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  We drove along the Little Pigeon River and stopped to enjoy this view of the water rushing over the boulders in the stream.

My World # 25

This is my post for the My World meme.  Last week there were over 120 people sharing their worlds.  To see more of our world or to join and share your part of the world, click HERE.

The picture above is not very good, but it is a scan of a slide taken in the mid-1960s.  The scene is the Court House square of my hometown of Crown Point, Indiana.

I actually lived in Crown Point for a little more than five years.  I lived on the small farm outside of town (see that post here) all through the time I was in the first grade until I graduated from high school.

Crown Point is the county seat of Lake County, Indiana.  Although a new county administration center has been built on the outskirts of town, the courthouse is still standing and is now a mall with small shops.  But it was still the courthouse while I was going to school.  But to give you an idea of how long ago that was, during Christmas they would play Christmas carols from the courthouse which could be heard throughout much of the town.  Can you imagine that happening today?  My Latin teacher, Miss Swartz, would get very upset with Bing Crosby’s pronunciation on his recording of Adeste Fideles.

Crown Point was noted for three things when I was growing up.  One of the first road races in the Midwest was held at Crown Point  on June 19, 1909.  The race, a forerunner of the Indianapolis 500, was won by Louis Chevrolet.  The Chevrolet automobile was later named in his honor.

Crown Point was known as a marriage mill in the 1920s and ’30s.  Rudolph Valentino, Red Grange, and Tom Mix all got married in Crown Point.

On January 30, 1934, John Dillinger, escaped from the Lake County jail located in Crown Point.  He escaped using a fake gun stained with black shoe polish.

I hope you enjoyed your visit to my world.

A Little Bit of Heaven

The view from Ed's Mill Cabin. March 26, 2009.

Imagine that you like waterfalls and have the opportunity to wake up in the morning, walk into the living room and see the view in the picture above.  (The picture can be enlarged if desired).

That’s exactly the situation Betsy and I found ourselves in over the weekend.  Last November we found a rental cabin in what had once been an old mill.  The cabin was in the Smokies at the base of a waterfall.  There wasn’t much water going over the falls in November, but we knew right away that we would want to go back.

We spent three nights at Serenity Falls and never got tired of watching the water cascade down the falls.  The window in our bedroom overlooked the creek below the falls and we slept with the window open so we could hear the water rushing over the rocks.  What more could two waterfall enthusiasts ask for?

Although we had some rain while we were in the Smokies it didn’t stop us from getting out an doing some hiking.  A high point (in more ways than one) was a 2.2 mile hike up into the mountains to see Hen Wallow Falls.  We were also able to check out a few smaller falls in the area, but we’ve left some bigger falls unseen so we have an excuse to go back in the future!

Cabin at the base of Serenity Falls, Great Smoky Mountains. November 10, 2008.

Last November Betsy and I spent a couple of days on the eastern side of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  While searching for waterfalls we came across the cabin in the picture above, which is located at the base of Serenity Falls.  In November there wasn’t much water going over the falls, but the setting was so nice that we decided we would like to go back when there was more water.

Well, we made reservations a couple of weeks ago and are going back there later today.  But then Tuesday night I posted a picture of Betsy in the rain at a waterfall.  It started raining early Wednesday morning and has been raining fairly steadily ever since.  The weather forecast says that it will rain through Saturday.  I might come back home with several more pictures of Betsy in the rain.

On a more serious note, today is Purple Day, a day to increase awareness of Epilepsy.  The writer of one of my favorite blogs, Michele at Rocky Mountain Retreat, has to live with this disease.  She recently suffered from a series of seizures which left her hospitalized.  Fortunately Michele is doing much better now.  Michele is a very talented photographer who posts marvelous pictures on her blog.  Stop by her site — you’ll be glad you did.

I thought the picture above definitely qualified for Watery Wednesday.  Betsy and I try to do our hiking when it’s not raining, but we’re not always successful.  This picture was taken at Lula Falls near Chattanooga, Tennessee.  As you can see, not only was there a pretty waterfall (Lower Lula Falls), but it was pouring down rain.  We definitely got our share of water that day!

The picture above is a scan of a slide made over 40 years ago.  This is where I lived from the time I was in first grade until I went off to college.

My Dad built the house, mostly by himself.  He started building it the summer before I was in the first grade.  He finished the basement before Christmas and we moved in.  He then worked his way up and we moved up as he finished rooms on the upper floors.  By the time I went to college the house wasn’t finished, but there were bedrooms on the second floor for us kids.  My parents’ bedroom was on the first floor, but the kitchen and living room were still in the basement.

We lived on a small ‘farm’ — a little over five acres.  The picture was taken from the orchard where we had apple, pear, and peach trees.  Our vegetable garden was to the right in this picture.

On the other side of the house were two fields.  One was a pasture and the other used for growing grain, usually corn.  We alternated the fields every couple of years.  Out of the picture behind the house was our barn and chicken coop.  We usually had a milk cow and one or two steers and sometimes we had pigs as well.

Our farm wasn’t very big, but it kept us busy (and fed) and was a very important part of my world for 12 years.

One of our favorite parts of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is Cades Cove.  Touring the Cove is like stepping back in time.  Not only does Cades Cove contain a lot of history, but it also contains some remarkable scenery.

Betsy’s ‘Dream’ Cabin

March 22, 2009

cabin01

Shortly after Betsy and I got married we started talking about finding our retirement home.  At first we talked about finding a log cabin.  Betsy really liked the idea of a cabin on the top of a hill with lots of trees around it.

It didn’t take us long to discover that our ‘dream’ house was way beyond our wallet.  We finally found our house in the Glade.  It’s not a log cabin, but it does have wooden siding.  It’s on a hill, but not at the top.  But it does have lots of trees around it.  And we thoroughly love it.

But that doesn’t keep us from keeping an eye out for a cabin that would fit into our dreams.  Last summer we went to Virginia for a reunion of a branch of Betsy’s family.  While driving through the country side near Big Stone Gap, we spotted the cabin in the picture above.  All Betsy said was ‘Ohhhh….’.

It’s not on top of a hill, but hey, we can’t have everything.

Whose Golf Course Is It?

Deer behind our house. March 20, 2009.

Deer behind our house. March 20, 2009.

Betsy and I have become accustomed to seeing deer on the golf course behind our house.  They usually come by in the late afternoon, and although they have enjoyed a few bites while we watched them, they are usually quite skittish and will quickly run off if golfers come by or dogs start barking.

But yesterday we saw six deer who behaved very differently.  They came down the fairway (nothing unusual about that) and started grazing behind the house.  After a few minutes they all looked up and stared at the tees further down the hill.  Two golfers had driven up to the tee in their cart and were preparing to tee off.  We expected the deer to take off, but they just stood there watching .  The golfers teed off (without hitting any of the deer) and slowly drove past them.

The deer went back to grazing and then the smallest deer laid down on the fairway.  That was definitely different from anything we had seen before.  After a few minutes another one laid down.  Now we were really intrigued!

After a while a neighbor’s dog started barking, but instead of running off into the woods the deer moved closer to the tee.  Soon all of them were lying down.  I’m not sure how long they rested, but after a while they got up one by one.  Shortly afterward they disappeared into the woods.

As I said, we’ve never seen deer act like that before.  Maybe they knew the golfers were through for the day.  Or maybe they just thought they owned the golf course.  In either case I’m glad I could get the pictures above.  The collage can be enlarged by clicking on it.

Skywatch Friday # 35

This is my entry for Sky Watch Friday, a weekly meme that allows you to see more of the sky from all over the world. Last week over 300 people shared their skies through this meme.  To see some beautiful skies from around world, or to join and share your sky photos with us, click HERE.

When Betsy and I visited by daughter and her husband in Buffalo last October, we also visited Old Fort Niagara.  The fort is at the entrance to the Niagara River not far from Niagara Falls and has been in existence since 1726.

It was a rainy, blustery day the afternoon we visited the fort.  I snapped this picture from the parade ground as more clouds moved in.  Since we were visiting an old military post, I couldn’t resist converting this to sepia.
