Skywatch Friday: A Golden Sunset

One of the advantages of living where we do on the Plateau is that we are often treated to beautiful sunsets.  This view greeted Betsy and me as we walked to the car after our ‘monthaversary’ celebration.  The sky was as glorious as the occasion was.

Betsy was able to get her MRI earlier in the day than we expected, so hopefully the doctor will get the results earlier as well.

I know I’m behind on visiting many of you.  I haven’t forgotten about you and will get to you, but today I have to go to Hendersonville to help my parents run some errands.  In the meantime I hope you all have a wonderful weekend, and, if this a holiday weekend for you, I hope you get summer off to a very happy start.

A Visit to Mount Magazine

I’m not sure where all the time goes.  It seems as if I just get started on something when the late news and weather is over and it’s time to go to bed.  The weather has been great — the weeds in the flower beds are growing like crazy!

Since I have been running out of time each day, I have gone to the archives to make this collage from our visit to Mount Magazine in Arkansas in 2009.  Mount Magazine is the highest point in Arkansas and contains some wonderful views, waterfalls and hiking trails.  It also has a great restaurant.  Betsy and I have spent the day at Mount Magazine on every Arkansas visit for the past three or four years.

Please keep Betsy in your prayers.  She has been having a great deal of pain with her left knee and finds it hard to put any weight on it at all.  We’ve been to a couple of doctors and she will have an MRI later this afternoon.  Hopefully the MRI will give the orthopedic surgeon some answers.

Watery Wednesday #89: Enjoying the Beach

One of the nice things about going to the beach in May is that we often have the place to ourselves.  A walk along the beach allows us to enjoy sand, blue skies, blue seas and white caps.  Not much could be better than that.

My World: I Promised Her a Rose Garden

Well, I didn’t promise a rose garden as much as a new flower bed.  This is the flower bed we built last year to keep me from having to mow the steep banks of the ditch in front of our house.  We built the wall and filled in behind it to make a new flower bed.

The irises in the bed have already bloomed, although they should all bloom again in the autumn.  The roses (7) are now blooming and the lilies have started to open.  In a couple of weeks we should have daylilies blooming there as well.

All in all, it’s not bad outcome for something to help solve a mowing problem.

Our yard and garden has been keeping me busy, so I haven’t had much time to work on pictures.  As a result I’ve gone back to my archives for this picture.

We were in the mountains of western North Carolina last July visiting family.  The day had been overcast, but in the late afternoon we were treated to rays of sunlight breaking through the clouds.

We enjoyed beautiful weather while we were at the beach earlier this month.  It did rain one day, but we had  beautiful blue skies most of the other days.  We were enjoying the beach one sunny day when I looked inland and saw all these clouds from an approaching front.  The contrast with the blue sky and sand of the beach was striking and attractive.

A New Rose

Since we built a new flower bed last autumn, we have some new roses in our yard this spring.  The first of the new roses to bloom is this sunny yellow grandiflora, Southern Belle.

Yellow roses are said to symbolize friendship and caring.  Since my Beautiful Bride and my Best Friend is also a Southern Belle, I thought it was entirely appropriate to add this rose to our garden.

Watery Wednesday #88: Ocean Isle Pier

When we were at Ocean Isle Beach the Islander Inn was within sight of the pier.  I enjoyed walking along the beach and watching the surf come in under the pier.  The pier itself makes an interesting pattern, and if you look closely you can see the spray caused by incoming waves hitting the pilings.

My World Is Coming Up Roses

Our world is coming up roses.  Most of the roses in our yard are now in bloom.  The picture above is of our biggest rose bed.  Some of the roses were in bloom when we got back from the beach, but they are now really putting on a show.  I’m sure I’ll have more pictures in the days ahead.

Scenic Sunday #96: Calabash, North Carolina

The picture above is of the Calash, North Carolina, waterfront.  Calabash is a fishing town and those are fishing boats at the dock.  Although the largest boats are shrimp boats, there are also charter boats available for deep sea fishing.  The inlet leading to the intracoastal waterway and the Atlantic is to the right front of the picture.

Calabash is also the location of some fabulous seafood restaurants.  To the left of the boats in the foreground (across the dock and some marsh land) is the Dockside Restaurant.  Calabash is just above the North Carolina – South Carolina border and only a few miles from North Myrtle Beach.  If you are in the area and want some great seafood, visit the Dockside or one of the other restaurants along the waterfront.
