SkyWatch Friday: Plateau Evening Skies

Evening skies in Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. August 7, 2011.

I’ve posted several sky photos from our trip out west, commenting on the pretty sunsets out there.  But we can have pretty skies here on the Plateau of Tennessee as well.

I went out to the front yard one evening last week after the sun had dropped below the ridge to the west of our house.  The yard and road in front of the house were in deep shadows, but the clouds in the sky to the east were a beautiful red/gold.

SkyWatch Friday: Oklahoma Evening Sky

Betsy and I were impressed — not always favorably — by the flat landscape in some of the western states.  But we found that one advantage to a flat landscape is sunsets that are as fantastic — if not more so — than those we have here in the mountains.  I captured the scene above as we were driving across Oklahoma.

SkyWatch Friday: Arizona Skies

There is no doubt that the main attractions of the Petrified Forest National Park are the Painted Desert and the petrified logs.  But the sky is also an attraction, especially on a clear day like it was when we visited in June.  As the day wore on, a few white clouds appeared.  The long, flat cloud in the picture above appeared over Puerco Pueblo, where we saw our first group of petroglyphs.

By the time we got past Newspaper Rock, a few smaller wispy clouds put in their appearance.

I can’t help but feel that those white clouds in that beautiful blue sky added to the wonderful colors of the Painted Desert.

Betsy and I were fortunate enough to see two sunsets at the Grand Canyon.  This sunset was captured from Mather Point near the Grand Canyon Visitor Center.  Pictures just can’t do the scene justice.

SkyWatch Friday: Evening Clouds

The evening eastern sky near El Reno, Oklahoma. June 11, 2011.

As the sun was setting ahead of us as we drove through the Oklahoma countryside, I noticed clouds forming in the eastern sky.  Although the base of the clouds were in darkness, the sky above was still blue, and the tops of the clouds were lit up by the light of the setting sun.

As we were driving toward Weatherford, Oklahoma, on our trip west, we were treated to a beautiful display of light and clouds in the evening sky.  I simply had to pull off the interstate to snap this picture of a sunbeam showing us the way.

SkyWatch Friday: A Wispy Cloud

June 10, 2011

A wispy cloud in the sky above Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. October 17, 2010.

If you watch the skies often enough, you will see all kinds of fascinating things.  I captured this wispy cloud in a brilliant October sky last year.  It wasn’t a part of a larger cloud formation, but just seemed to be suspended in the sky.  I thought it was both interesting and pretty.

I would like to thank each and every one of you for your kind words and prayers on the passing of my mother.  The funeral was hard for my Dad (he’ll be 99 in August) but he was doing pretty well on Thursday.  The entire family felt surrounded and uplifted by your thoughts and prayers.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Betsy and I are once again taking a blog break.  We’ll be traveling for the rest of the month.  I’m not sure what kind of skies we’ll encounter, but I expect we’ll both come back with plenty of pictures to share.

I’ll see you in July.

Whenever we go to Cades Cove in the Smokies, I have trouble deciding which is most impressive — the mountains or the skies.  When we were there last week I decided that both were magnificent.

I went to my archives to get this picture of an afternoon storm approaching the island of Bali.  You can see some sail boats at the extreme right of the photo — they were hurrying to the beach before the storm hit.

The picture above was scanned from a slide.

Skywatch Friday: Clouds Over the Ocean

May 20, 2011

Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina. May 4, 2011.

When visiting the beach, I’m never sure which is most picturesque — the ocean or the sky.  I got this shot one afternoon while walking along the beach.  It was a gorgeous day and I was intrigued by the clouds floating across that beautiful blue sky.

By the way, the blip on the horizon is a casino boat heading back to Little River, South Carolina after the morning gambling cruise.
