A Belated Birthday Celebration

November 10, 2008

belated_birthday

Betsy and I are finally celebrating her birthday — we’re only three months late!

I had originally planned to take Betsy to a cabin in the Smokies to celebrate her birthday in August, but we had to postpone that because of my surgery.  But we were able to reschedule for November, so we will be enjoying the Smokies for the next couple of days.

Since the autumn colors are past their peak, we may have some places to ourselves.  We’ll hopefully see some new waterfalls, do some hiking, and do a lot of relaxing!  It should be nice!!!

Our Last Roses

Glowing Peace and Double Delight Roses. November 7, 2008.

Glowing Peace and Double Delight Roses. November 7, 2008.

As I mentioned yesterday, we’ve had a cold front move through our area with temperatures down around freezing.  On Friday I brought in what will probably be our last roses of the season, which are shown in the picture above.  The rose on the left is called Glowing Peace, while the rose on the right is my personal favorite, Double Delight.

I think our roses did pretty well this year.  I’m still working on getting the rose beds fixed up properly, but we did have 33 different varieties bloom this year.

We had our first rose bloom on May 9 and that rose was, interestingly enough, Double Delight!  So I guess you could say that Double Delight began and ended our roses this year.  Since it is as fragrant as it is beautiful, I couldn’t think of a more appropriate beginning and ending for the roses this year.

Another Iris in Bloom

Flower Show Iris, Fairfield Glade, November 3, 2008.

Will the iris above be the last we have to bloom this year?  This iris burst into bloom a couple of days ago, giving us some much-appreciated color in an otherwise drab flower garden.

There are a couple more iris flower stalks showing, but I’m not sure they will have a chance to bloom before they get nipped by frost.  A cold front moved through yesterday and lows are predicted to be near or at the freezing level for the next few days.  Lows like that are great for enjoying a roaring fire in the fireplace, but not for blooming flowers.

We were especially glad to see Floor Show bloom because it didn’t bloom this spring.  I guess it thought we would enjoy it more in the fall!

Eating Us Out of House and Home

Young Goldfinch in one of our feeders. October 28, 2008.

I’ve mentioned several times that Betsy has become an avid birder.  She keeps a pair of binoculars by her favorite chair and periodically consults several books and blogs in her attempts to identify new birds that come to our feeders.

We now have six stations where the birds can get food.  Betsy has tried her best to provide the favorite food of each of the different birds in our area.  Judging by the numbers of ‘feathered friends’ on our deck, I would say that Betsy has done a good job.

I guess we’re running a cafeteria for birds.  I will admit that the birds are interesting, and the young ones are even cute.  But they sure can eat!!  It seems that we’re having to refill feeders every time we turn around.

I’m glad Betsy likes her birds.  I just hope we can continue to afford to feed them!

More Autumn Color

A red tree in the Glade. November, 2008.

I guess the Good Lord is telling me that I need to learn to be a little more patient.  After complaining about the lack of autumn color this year I saw more and more and more color.

I took the picture above on one of our daily walks here in the Glade.  I spotted the tree from a walking path behind the new Conference Center.  I had to do a little bushwhacking to get the picture, but it was worth it.

Each day has brought new beauty around us.  We are certainly blessed to be able to live in such gorgeous surroundings.  And one of the nicest things is that we find new beauty when we least expect it!!

America Has Spoken

November 5, 2008

America has spoken and Barack Obama will be the next president of the United States.

I will admit that he wasn’t my personal choice.  But he was America’s choice and so he will be my president.  As such he is entitled to my respect and to my support as president of my country.  That doesn’t mean that I will agree with him on everything he does — I may not agree with anything he does.  But I am a citizen of the United States and Barack Obama will be my president.

I hope President-Elect Obama will practice what he preached during much of the campaign and bring us together.  We are  very badly divided — there seems to be no ‘united’ in the United States!  I hope President Obama will be able to heal some of these divisions.

The campaign was long and hard-fought.  Now it’s time for us to come together.

It’s Over!!!

By the time you read this, Election Day voting should be underway.  With the exception of a few last-minute events, the 2008 campaign has come to an end.  I can’t begin to tell you how delighted I am.

Reports say that this has been the longest and most expensive presidential campaign in American history.  As far as I’m concerned two years is entirely too long.  For me the main result of the long campaign was that I have less respect for both of the major party candidates than I had months ago.  I think they both spent entirely too much time tearing down each other.  Their ads were more misleading than enlightening.

Why should any campaign last two years?  If Canada can hold an election within six weeks of the start of the campaign, why can’t we?  Sure our population is larger, but is it really that much larger?

This election has cost approximately a billion dollars.  That’s over $300 for each American citizen.  Both candidates have said they have plans to stimulate the economy.  If I had received $300 the week before Election Day I promise I would have quickly spent it!!

The good news is that the 2008 presidential campaign is over.  I just hope the 2012 campaign doesn’t start tomorrow.

That’s Close Enough

A deer behind our house. October 28, 2008.

Betsy and I really like our home here in the Glade (as I’m sure you can tell).  We think it’s just perfect for us and we’ve done quite a bit of landscaping.

But there are some disadvantages to living in a wildlife preserve.  One of those disadvantages is shown in the picture above.  Deer love to wander — and eat!!!  Several years ago we realized we had a problem when we came back from a trip and found the flowers of all our lilies in a small bed in the front yard eaten away.  Once we started growing roses we quickly found that roses are a favored snack for deer.

Fences aren’t permitted in the Glade, so we had to find a way to keep the deer from eating flowers faster than they could grow.  Fortunately a friend told us about a product called Liquid Fence.  Liquid Fence stinks to high heaven, but it keeps  the deer away — most of the time.  We spray it at regular intervals and  it does a pretty good job of keeping the deer away.

We still enjoy seeing deer on the golf course or across the street.  Anyplace but our yard!!!

Autumn Has Arrived!

Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. November 1, 2008.

I’ve mentioned a couple of times that because of the drought we don’t have as much color this autumn as we’ve had in the past.  Many leaves simply went from green to dull brown.

We still are suffering from the drought, but we had a little rain last week and we’ve had cooler weather for the past week or so.  As a result, we’re finally starting to see some good autumn color.

The picture above was taken yesterday in our front yard.  Yesterday was a beautiful autumn day with a gorgeous blue sky.  We certainly live in a beautiful part of the country.  Stop by and enjoy it with us!

Where’s the Other Waterfall?

Lower Akron Falls, Akron, New York. October 24, 2008.

Lower Akron Falls, Akron, New York. October 24, 2008.

Kelly’s husband, Chuck, grew up in Akron, New York, near Buffalo.  When we visited them last weekend, they took us to a city park in Akron, where there was a waterfall that they had visited several times.

Akron Falls Park is a beautiful place, and there was enough autumn color left on the trees to make it truly beautiful.  The hike to the waterfall was an easy one and the waterfall was as pretty as they promised.  We thoroughly enjoyed the view

Imagine our surprise when we discovered, after we got home, that Akron Falls Park contains two waterfalls.  The falls we saw, Lower Akron Falls, is the larger of the two.  The second falls, which Kelly and Chuck didn’t know about, is about 600 feet upstream from the lower falls and is reached by a different trail.

So it looks as if we’ll need to make another trip to Akron to see that second fall.  But Lower Akron Falls is the 280th waterfall in our ‘collection’.  To see all of them, click on WATERFALLS.
