The picture above was taken in May of this year while we were visiting friends in western North Carolina.  It was cloudy and overcast when we got up, but the clouds started to lift as the morning went on.  We could definitely see blue sky after we finished breakfast.

“Red sky at night, sailor’s delight”

We may not have many sailors here on the Plateau of Tennessee, but we have many people who can appreciate a beautiful sunset.  I snapped this red sky from the golf course behind our house on this past Sunday evening.

This is just a short note to let you know that I’m taking a break over Labor Day weekend.  I need to labor in the yard and get some other projects done.  Have a great weekend and I’ll see you Tuesday morning.

Betsy and her childhood girlfriends are working on their ‘Girls Only’ annual getaway.  This year they’re talking about renting a cabin in Maggie Valley, North Carolina.

That got me to looking through some of my North Carolina pictures.  I came across the picture above, which was taken near Franklin, North Carolina earlier this year.  It shows clouds over the western North Carolina mountains in the early evening.  The tops of some of the clouds still reflect the setting sun.

I’ve already posted about our visit to Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine during our Florida trip earlier this month.  (That post is HERE if you want to learn more about this fascinating place).

It was beautiful while we were there.  The temperature was relatively mild (by Florida standards) and the the sun was shining brightly.  There were enough fluffy white clouds to make the sky interesting.  I couldn’t resist sharing this additional picture from that day.

Skywatch Friday # 57: Sunset at Ormond Beach

The picture above was taken at sunset on Betsy’s birthday.  We were in Ormond Beach, Florida, and had a room overlooking the Atlantic.

Now I know the sun doesn’t set over the Atlantic from Florida.  The sun was going down behind us on the other side of the building.  But I liked the color of the clouds over the ocean that I couldn’t resist snapping this photo.  And, of course, I had to share it on Skywatch Friday.

This is obviously not a picture I took this week.  It is actually a scan of a slide I took in 1990.  I was on my second trip to China and our hosts took us to the Great Wall at Badaling, outside of Beijing.  This watchtower is located at the highest point on the south side of the pass.  I made it to the tower, but not before taking this picture.

It was a beautiful day for hiking on the Great Wall, and I really like the wispy clouds in that blue sky.

Yesterday Betsy and I visited our friends Judy and Charlie, who were camping at Cades Cove in the Smokies.  Judy and Charlie camp there every year, and Betsy and I usually go over to visit with them at least one day.  We sit around a campfire (it’s been cool in the mountains) and get caught up on what each couple has been doing since the last time we got together.

We talked so much yesterday that we didn’t have time for a hike, so the best Betsy and I could do was drive to the beginning of the Cades Cove loop and get a few pictures.  That’s where the picture above was taken.

Celebrating our monthaversary at Cafe Uno, Maryville, Tennessee. July 23, 2009.

Celebrating our monthaversary at Cafe Uno, Maryville, Tennessee. July 23, 2009.

Yesterday was our 97th ‘monthaversary’.  We decided since we met so late in life we would celebrate our wedding ‘monthaversary’ as well as the anniversary.  Since it was on the way home, we decided to stop at Uno’s for a deep dish Chicago pizza.  It had been quite some time since we had one and that seemed like a great way to end a special day.

Last Friday evening we were at Mountain Air, North Carolina, enjoying a delicious meal prepared by my son and his girlfriend.  We were sitting on the deck of the condo when the sky slowly changed color after the sun set.

I couldn’t get around the trees in the foreground, but I did manage to capture the red afterglow.

If you don’t like Tennessee weather, wait a while — it will change.  This picture was taken from our front yard last week.  It was a day of clear blue skies, high fluffy white clouds and threatening rain clouds.  And that was just in the afternoon!

Fishing Guy and his wife. July 9, 2009

Fishing Guy and his wife. July 9, 2009

One of the members of the Skywatch team is Fishing Guy.  Fishing Guy was one of the first bloggers I came across when I moved to Blogger.  Tom (Fishing Guy) lives in Kent, Ohio, which is not far from Cleveland, where i used to teach.

Tom and his wife spent a some time in Nashville earlier this week and stopped by Crossville on their way home.  Betsy and I met them for lunch at the Cracker Barrel in town and had a wonderful time getting to know each other.  It’s so wonderful to be able to meet in person people you’ve gotten to know through the blogsphere.

If you’re in Tennessee please let us know so we can meet you as well.

This young fan of Spongebob Squarepants is my grandson Sean.  Betsy and I are going to North Carolina for the weekend to see him and his father (my son Bob).  They are visiting the mountains and we’re going to meet them for some time together.  Betsy and I will be back Sunday.

Skywatch Friday # 51

As we were getting ready to come home from our anniversary trip I noticed the white clouds forming between the blue sky and green trees in Dillard, Georgia.  I just had to try and capture that pretty sight and since this is the beginning of the Fourth of July weekend, the American flag makes the picture even more appropriate for this particular Skywatch Friday.
