A (Late) Homage to Spring

May 21, 2019

(Note:  All pictures may be enlarged by clicking on them once or twice.)

I realize that I’m a little late in paying homage to the beauty of Spring around our house since the Cumberland Plateau is now experiencing summer-like temperatures. But Spring is a beautiful season and we love seeing the yard come alive with color.

Crocus are the first Spring blossoms to make an appearance. Since crocus are also a favorite menu item for the critters around here we don’t have many left, but the ones we do have are always welcome.

Daffodils come next, and since the critters don’t like them very much we have quite a few different varieties showing off in our flower beds.

The white Mount Hood daffodil is a favorite, and is always beautiful.

We’re never quite sure what to expect with tulips. Every critter in the area seems to love to snack on them. But we have had several flowers bloom, some with unusual shapes but beautiful colors.

Others have a more traditional shape, but are just as beautiful.

Sometimes the interior of a tulip blossom is as pretty as the exterior.

My son Robert and his family planned to come to Tennessee for Thanksgiving, but when their plans changed Betsy and I travelled down to Florida to have Thanksgiving with them.  One advantage of making the trip was that Robert agreed to make some of his fried turkey for us, a treat that neither Betsy nor I had had before.

The process started with Robert injecting some Cajun marinade into two turkey breasts and a whole turkey (he must have thought we were hungry!).

The turkey breasts then went into the fryer with the help of a friend.  While these two played around fixing dinner, I worked hard as the official photographer.

The turkey was fried after the breasts were done, and it came out of the fryer a beautiful golden brown.

While we were busy slaving away outside with the fryer, Melissa was busy in the kitchen.  The result of all this work was a feast fit for a king.

Down Memory Lane: Castillo San Marcos

In August, 2009, Betsy and I traveled to Florida to see her brother in Jacksonville and to celebrate Betsy’s birthday.  After leaving Jacksonville we stopped in St. Augustine to visit Castillo San Marcos, the fortress built by the Spanish to protect their outpost.

SkyWatch Friday: Sunset Afterglow

We celebrated Betsy’s birthday in 2009 at Ormond Beach, Florida.  We had a room that looked out over the ocean, but I captured this beautiful sky photo by going to the other side of the building and shooting the western sky shortly after sunset.  The landscape may not be as pretty as the ocean, but the sky couldn’t be any more glorious.

I was working with some pictures taken back in August, 2009, when I came across this picture of a watch tower and walls of Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine, Florida.  Since I captured the fortress under a bright, but cloudy, Florida sky, I thought this was an appropriate picture for Skywatch Friday.

Betsy and I enjoyed our last blogging break so much that we are taking another.  Hopefully we’ll be back about May 9.

On Wednesday I posted a picture taken looking out to sea from Ormond Beach, Florida (that picture can be seen by clicking HERE). I posted that picture because of the golden pink color of the water as the sun came up.

Turning to my right while on the balcony and looking down the beach, I got this picture.  I like the color of the clouds in this view.

We celebrated Betsy’s birthday last year by going to Ormond Beach, Florida.  We had a room that overlooked the ocean and got up early on the day of Betsy’s birthday to see the sunrise.  The sea was calm, and just before the sun popped out of the clouds offshore, the water took on a golden sheen.

All in all it was a great start to a special day for my special girl.

When Betsy and I were at Ormond Beach in Florida last August we had an ocean-front room and were able to enjoy a sunrise from the balcony.  For a brief moment the sun turned the water a dark red-gold, making a good subject for Watery Wednesday.

Down Memory Lane: November, 2001

March 8, 2010

Scenes from November, 2001.

Several weeks ago I came across a folder of pictures taken back in November, 2001.  That was the first November that Betsy and I were together.  It was also the first November that Betsy had been in Tennessee after several years in Louisiana and Texas, so she was still going ‘ga-ga’ over every bit of autumn color of she saw.

The highlight of the month was a trip we made to Saint Augustine, Florida, to see Betsy’s brother, Ray, and his wife Evelyn.  We went out for Thanksgiving dinner and were joined by Betsy’s son, Bert, and her grandson, Chris.

Ray and Evelyn gave us a tour of Saint Augustine while we were down there.  We visited the lighthouse as well as Ray and Evelyn’s church.  While at the the church Betsy practiced her preaching style from the pulpit.  It’s too bad there were only three of us in the congregation!

My sweet bride is ‘kidnapping’ me for a few days to celebrate my birthday.  She hasn’t told me where we are going, but I suspect our trip might involve some waterfalls.  I don’t know how often we’ll have internet connections, but I’ll try to visit with my iPod whenever I can.
