I realize summer doesn’t officially arrive until Sunday, but we’ve had typical summer weather up here on the Plateau.  The mornings start out sunny and clear — a perfect day.  In the afternoons the clouds start rolling in.  Sometimes we get rain; sometimes we only get more clouds.

This picture was taken in our front yard earlier this week.  A little of the blue sky remains, but the clouds are definitely on the way.  We didn’t get any rain that day.

While we were in Arkansas in March, Betsy and I visited Mount Magazine State Park on a dreary rainy day.  Mount Magazine has many wonderful views, several good hiking trails which we enjoy, and a wonderful restaurant that serves delicious lunches.

As we were getting ready to head back down the mountain we stopped at an overlook of the Petit Jean River Valley.  The sky was gray and dull looking, but there were clouds rolling over the mountains on the other side of the valley.  Even though the sky is indistinct, I like this picture anyway.

Betsy and I visited our friends Judy and Charlie last week in the mountains of North Carolina.  It rained fairly hard the first afternoon we were there, but it cleared up in the early evening.  That’s when I got the picture above.  The sky was clearing but there were still clouds over the mountains and fog was rising from the valley below the cabin.

Last week I posted a picture of a moonrise over the ocean at the beach while we were on vacation.  We were treated to a beautiful show for three nights, and of course I took more than one picture.  I couldn’t resist posting another picture of the moon over the ocean.  We were enthralled by the reflection on the water, which you can better see by enlarging the photo above.

There were so many nice things about our vacation at the beach that it’s hard to pick the one thing that stands out.  I’ve already mentioned the beach and the seafood and Betsy talked about some of the waterfalls we saw to and from the beach.

But one very special thing was the show Mother Nature put on for us the last two nights we were at the beach.  We had a beautiful moonrise right opposite the balcony of our room.  The moon and the reflection on the ocean were absolutely gorgeous.

Of course I didn’t have a tripod with me, so the picture above is not as good as it could be.  Still, it’s a nice reminder of a couple of special evenings.

I’ve posted another picture of the moon over the ocean on my photo blog, Photos by Senior Hiker.  You can see it by clicking HERE.

The picture above was taken on Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.  I honestly don’t know what I like most about this picture — the sky, the beach, or the ocean.

I selected this picture because Betsy and I are getting ready to head back there for a week.  We try to get there each year, and although we’ve been on the road quite a bit this year, we decided to go back.  The beach is nice, but the seafood is irresistible!  Fortunately our yard and garden can get along without us for a few days.

I plan on doing a post tomorrow (Saturday) morning, but then we’ll be away from our computers for a week.

The picture above was taken this past Tuesday at Fall Creek Falls State Park here in Tennessee.  The waterfalls are usually the main attraction of this park.  We did enjoy the waterfalls, but the day was bright and sunny with many clouds floating in the blue sky.

This picture was taken at the Fall Creek Falls Overlook, but I was looking across Cane Creek Gorge.  Cane Creek Gorge is about 15 miles long and is sometimes referred to as Tennessee’s Grand Canyon.  It is very impressive, but on this day so was the sky above it.

The picture above was taken on Galveston Island in April, 2008, before Hurricane Ike devastated the island later in the year.  Betsy’s son worked at a new resort on the island and he was giving us a tour of the resort club house when I took this picture.  I like the clouds floating in over the Gulf.

It’s difficult to reconcile this pretty picture with the damage caused by the hurricane.

Sunrises and sunsets at sea always seem especially spectacular.  Betsy and I enjoyed the sunrises and sunsets each day on our Caribbean cruise.  This particular sunrise was taken on our day at sea as we returned to San Juan at the end of the cruse.  I can’t account for the green tinge in the sky, but I do know that I like the picture and think it is appropriate for Sky Watch Friday.

When Betsy and I visited by daughter and her husband in Buffalo last October, we also visited Old Fort Niagara.  The fort is at the entrance to the Niagara River not far from Niagara Falls and has been in existence since 1726.

It was a rainy, blustery day the afternoon we visited the fort.  I snapped this picture from the parade ground as more clouds moved in.  Since we were visiting an old military post, I couldn’t resist converting this to sepia.
