Moon over the ocean at Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina. May 6, 2009.

This is my post for Skywatch Friday, a meme for sharing views of the sky from all over the world.  Last week a couple hundred people shared their view of the sky.  To see more, or to join and share your own photos of the sky, click HERE.

Last week I posted a picture of a moonrise over the ocean at the beach while we were on vacation.  We were treated to a beautiful show for three nights, and of course I took more than one picture.  I couldn’t resist posting another picture of the moon over the ocean.  We were enthralled by the reflection on the water, which you can better see by enlarging the photo above.

There were so many nice things about our vacation at the beach that it’s hard to pick the one thing that stands out.  I’ve already mentioned the beach and the seafood and Betsy talked about some of the waterfalls we saw to and from the beach.

But one very special thing was the show Mother Nature put on for us the last two nights we were at the beach.  We had a beautiful moonrise right opposite the balcony of our room.  The moon and the reflection on the ocean were absolutely gorgeous.

Of course I didn’t have a tripod with me, so the picture above is not as good as it could be.  Still, it’s a nice reminder of a couple of special evenings.

I’ve posted another picture of the moon over the ocean on my photo blog, Photos by Senior Hiker.  You can see it by clicking HERE.

Watery Wednesday # 35

Shrimp boat off the coast of North Carolina. May 6, 2009.

Shrimp boat off the coast of North Carolina. May 6, 2009.

This is my post for Watery Wednesday, a weekly meme created and hosted by 2sweeetnsaxy of Eyes, Mind, Heart.  To see more of our beautiful watery world, or to join and post your own pictures to share, click HERE.

The picture above was taken from the balcony of our room at Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.  We could see at least one shrimp boat off the coast just about every day.  We liked to think that the boat was busy catching our dinner for that evening.

We thoroughly enjoyed the beach and we enjoyed the seafood even more, if that is possible.  Ocean Isle is just north of Calabash, North Carolina, and  Little River, South Carolina.  Both of those towns are fishing ports and it’s possible to buy seafood fresh seafood right off the boats.  Betsy and I prefer to let someone else buy and prepare the seafood.  Both towns have excellent seafood restaurants and we have favorites in both towns and visit them each year.

An ocean view and fresh seafood — two wonderful things about our watery world.

The picture above was taken on Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.  I honestly don’t know what I like most about this picture — the sky, the beach, or the ocean.

I selected this picture because Betsy and I are getting ready to head back there for a week.  We try to get there each year, and although we’ve been on the road quite a bit this year, we decided to go back.  The beach is nice, but the seafood is irresistible!  Fortunately our yard and garden can get along without us for a few days.

I plan on doing a post tomorrow (Saturday) morning, but then we’ll be away from our computers for a week.

Scenic Sunday # 33

Sunset Beach, North Carolina. June, 2001.

Sunset Beach, North Carolina. June, 2001.

As I post this on Saturday evening our part of the Plateau is under a Winter Weather Advisory.  We could get an inch or two of snow.

While Betsy is delighted at the prospect I am decidedly less enthusiastic.  I’ll admit that I’m looking forward to warmer weather.  With that in mind, I decided to post the above picture as my contribution to Scenic Sunday.

Betsy and I try to get to the beach each year for several days.  We usually go to the area around Little River, South Carolina.  We go there because I lived in Little River for three years before moving to Tennessee and meeting Betsy.

This particular picture was taken in June, 2001, on Sunset Beach, North Carolina, just north of Little River.  Sunset Beach is an island off the coast which is primarily residential in nature.  Most of the houses are single family and it is much less ‘touristy’ than Myrtle Beach.

It is possible to walk down the beach beyond the homes.  Once past the homes it’s easy to forget that their are other people around at all.  There is just the sea, the sand and the dunes.  This picture shows the grass on some low dunes above the high tide mark.  Sunset Beach may not quite be a tropical paradise, but it is pretty close.

Dunes on Sunset Beach, North Carolina. June, 2001.

Dunes on Sunset Beach, North Carolina. June, 2001.

I came upon this meme fairly late in the day, but I thought I would try to make a contribution anyway.

The picture above was taken on Sunset Beach, North Carolina, in June, 2001.  Betsy and I were on our honeymoon and we spent the day on Sunset Beach.  The picture, which can be enlarged by clicking on it, shows the dunes behind the beach proper.

Sunset Beach is the smallest and quietest of the three barrier islands which make up the South Brunswick Islands.  Sunset Beach, which is about three miles long,  has a white sand backed by sand dunes.  One reason Sunset Beach is so quiet is that the only road access to the island is across a one-lane pontoon swing bridge.  All traffic had to stop when the bridge swung open to allow boats to pass along the Intracoastal Waterway.  A new bridge is being built, so it will be interesting to see if the island remains fairly quiet.

I had been to Sunset Beach several times, but this was Betsy’s first visit.  When this picture was taken I still had a home in Little River, South Carolina, which is about twelve miles south of Sunset Beach.

Another Sunset Photo

December 13, 2008

I enjoy taking pictures of sunrises and sunsets and will take almost any opportunity to show them.  Sunday’s Sunrise/Sunset Photo Meme gives me such an opportunity.  To see other sunrise/sunset pictures from all over the world click on the logo or name above.

The picture below was taken in May, 2008, at Sunset Beach, North Carolina.  Betsy and I were spending a few days at the beach and had driven to Sunset Beach after an early dinner.  Sunset Beach is an island and we were on our way back to the mainland as the sun was going down.  There was no other traffic on the causeway at this moment, so I stopped to get this picture.  The Intracoastal Waterway is in the foreground.

Down Memory Lane: Ocean Isle Beach

October 27, 2008
Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina. May, 2007.

Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina. May, 2007.

I lived in Little River, South Carolina, for three years.  Little River is just north of Myrtle Beach near the North Carolina line.

When Betsy and I started going to the beach we first went to a small place in North Myrtle Beach.  We really liked the Cherry Grove Manor, but it closed after the 2006 season in order to make room for a new high-rise condo.

We then discovered the Islander Inn at Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.  Ocean Isle Beach is only about 12 miles from Little River.  Ocean Isle Beach is a barrier island approximately seven miles long.  The year-round resident population is only about 425, but during the season the population increases to about 25,000!

Ocean Isle Beach was hit hard by Hurricane Hugo in 1989, but the town came up with a beach restoration project that began in 2001.  This year Ocean Isle Beach was named one of America’s Best Restored Beaches.
