Hiking with Betsy

Hiking with Betsy

(Note:  All pictures may be enlarged by clicking on them once or twice.)

Betsy planned a wonderful birthday celebration for me last weekend.  We went down to Fort Payne, Alabama, to do some hiking and visit some waterfalls.  We’ve been dan there before, but there was more water this time than on our earlier visits.

Hiking with Betsy is a great way to celebrate a birthday, or any day.  The collage above contains photos taken last weekend.  The picture on the upper left shows us at Little River Falls in the Little River Canyon National Preserve near Fort Payne.  Although I love hiking with Betsy, she does sometimes get carried away with the trails she picks as you can see by the picture on the upper right.

Betsy patiently waits while I’m playing around trying to get the ‘perfect’ shot, as the picture on the lower left shows.  (I love that beautiful smile!).  The middle picture shows us at Lost Falls in Desoto State Park.

The picture on the right shows the best part of hiking with Betsy.  This picture was taken along the West Fork of the Little River, also in Desoto State Park.

I’m already looking forward to our next hiking trip.

Down Memory Lane: Our Reception

2001 -- Reception I

(Note:  All pictures may be enlarged by clicking on them once or twice.)

Although we both lived in Hendersonville, Tennessee, at the time, we got married in Knoxville.  We did this so that we could have a small family wedding.  Betsy was the Associate Minister at a large Methodist church in Hendersonville and she didn’t want to have to make decisions about who in the congregation should be invited and who should not.

‘The Girls’, Betsy’s girlfriends from the Hendersonville church, gave us a reception in the church fellowship hall a few weeks after our wedding.  This allowed members of the Hendersonville church to share in our wedding.

I came across pictures from the reception when I was going through my archives and posting pictures on my photo website.  The collage above includes some of those pictures.  From left to right along the top:  Betsy and I when we arrived at the reception, sampling some of the goodies, and with ‘The Girls’.  On the bottom left we’re sharing some photos from our wedding and honeymoon.  On the bottom right I’m talking with Mom and Dad.

Silly Time is Here

ChristmasCollagesIII

(Note:  All pictures may be enlarged by clicking on them once or twice.)

On our first Christmas after we got married, Betsy and I took some pictures which we used in Christmas cards the following Christmas.  That led to our habit of taking ‘formal’ pictures each Christmas morning.

Our routine is to set up the tripod, get dressed in nice clothes, and take many pictures, hoping that at least one is a ‘keeper’.

The whole process can take a fair amount of time, which can lead to some silly pictures as well as good ones.

Santa gave me a post-Christmas present of a neat collage maker.  The collage in this post is my first attempt to make a collage from scratch.

Family Time

November 30, 2012

(Note:  All pictures may be enlarged by clicking on them once or twice.)

It’s always a special time for Betsy when her middle son from Texas visits east Tennessee with his wife and two daughters.  They have many people to see in a short time, but we were able to spend the afternoon of Friday following Thanksgiving with them at Fall Creek Falls State Park.  We had a delicious lunch and  visit in the park lodge and then went to the Fall Creek Falls overlook to see the waterfall and take some pictures.

Judging from the smiles, it’s safe to say that everyone enjoyed themselves.

Skywatch Friday: Betsy’s Sky Pictures (2)

This is my post for Skywatch Friday, a meme for sharing views of the sky from all over the world.  To see more, or to join and share your own photos of the sky, click HERE.

Betsy and I drove the Foothills Parkway in October so we could enjoy some of the Smokies’ autumn color.  As we drove home in, Betsy was able to get some pictures of the evening sky as we drove up onto the Plateau.  As you can see from the photo above, the sunset was spectacular.

Even after the sun dropped below the Plateau on the west, the sky continued to put on a show.

The variety of cloud forms and colors was amazing.

Each passing moment seemed to bring new color and forms — even the trail of a passing jet.

Mother of the Groom

Betsy and son Jeff’s wedding, Dalton, Georgia. October 6, 2012.

(Note:  All pictures may be enlarged by clicking on them once or twice.)

Betsy’s son Jeff got married last month, and while the bride was beautiful, there is no doubt in my mind that the prettiest woman at the church was the Mother of the Groom.

In the past Betsy has been self-conscious about her weight, and I often had trouble getting her to let me take her picture.  But now that she’s close to what she weighed in high school, I think she rather enjoys having her picture taken.

Betsy in the Smokies

September 5, 2012

(Note:  All pictures may be enlarged by clicking on them once or twice.)

In late August we had some early morning appointments in Knoxville, so we decided to make a day of it by visiting the Smokies after finishing up in Knoxville.  We drove along Middle Prong past Tremont, and although the water level was low, we found plenty of reasons to stop and enjoy the scenery.  Later in the day we drove around Cades Cove, one of our favorite  parts of the park.

This collage is made up of photos I took of Betsy during our day in the Smokies.

Is She Trying to Tell Me Something?

August 13, 2012

Betsy’s ‘dream house’ in Fairfield Bay, Arkansas.  August 5, 2012.

(Note:  All pictures may be enlarged by clicking on them once or twice.)

When Betsy lived and worked in Houston, Texas, she often spent the week after Christmas on vacation in Fairfield Bay, Arkansas.  Since we were in the area while celebrating Betsy’s birthday, she decided to show me around.

After finding the timeshare she used to own, Betsy decided she wanted to drive down to the lake.  She said this is something she did on every visit.  On our way to the lake she told me about a beautiful house that she liked very much.  She always told her friends (and her sons) that the house was her ‘dream house’ and that she would own it some day.

Another view of Betsy’s ‘dream house’, Fairfield Bay, Arkansas. August 5, 2012.

We drove by the house, and I must admit that it is very pretty.  We only saw the front yard, but I liked the wooded setting.  The house has a nice long deck along the front.  I must admit that I liked it as well.

Before you read any further, I need to remind you that the first time I ever went to Fairfield Glade is when Betsy wanted to show me where she stayed during a vacation in Tennessee several years ago.  You’ll see the relevance of this statement when you scroll down.

Betsy has that mischievous look on her face. I wonder why?

Do you think Betsy is trying to tell me something?

Skywatch Friday: Moon Over the Glade

August 3, 2012

Moon over Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. July 27, 2012.

(Note:  All pictures may be enlarged by clicking on them once or twice.)

This is my post for Skywatch Friday, a meme for sharing views of the sky from all over the world.  To see more, or to join and share your own photos of the sky, click HERE.

I must admit that I’m a sucker when it comes to seeing the moon in a blue sky.  I can’t resist taking a picture (or several).  Last Friday the moon was almost overhead as the sun was setting.  The clouds to the east had a pretty peach glow from the setting sun.

Sometimes the clouds got in the way, but even then the scene was pretty enough that I kept snapping away.

A few minutes later the clouds and sun were both gone and I concentrated on the moon itself.  I must admit I like the craters I captured at the boundary between the dark and light sides of the moon.

Betsy enjoying snow in the mountains of Virginia. She was as beautiful then as she is now.

Someone is having a birthday on Sunday.  I can’t tell you who it is, but I will give you a couple of hints —

Hint #1: She still likes snow.
Hint #2:  She’s my Beautiful Bride.

I know it would make her very happy if you would pop over to her blog, Joyful Reflections, and wish her a Happy Birthday.

Our World: Centennial Park

July 16, 2012

The West End of Nashville showing Centennial Park and the place where I worked for ClientLogic.

(Note:  All pictures may be enlarged by clicking on them.)

This is my post for the Our World meme.  This meme is a second generation of My World Tuesday created by Klaus Peter and is hosted by five wonderful ladies.  To learn more about our world or to join and share your part of the world, click HERE.

On June 23 Betsy and I went to Nashville to celebrate our eleventh anniversary.  The first place we visited was Centennial Park.  When I met Betsy I was working a couple of blocks from the park and would walk there on my lunch hour (see the image above).  When Betsy and I were dating, and even after we got married, we would often have lunch together in the park.

Our second date was on April 7, 2001, and we went Centennial Park.  At that time the gardens were full of Spring blossoms.  I took the picture above (it was the second picture I ever took of Betsy) amid the tulips.

There were no tulips this time, but lots of marigolds and other summer blossoms.  I got this picture fairly near where the previous picture was taken.

Although it was very warm on June 23, the gardens were still beautiful.  I will admit, though, that the more we walked, the more we tried to stay in the shade.

But we did stay out in the sun long enough for me to set up the tripod and get this picture of us on our special day.
