I’m sure most of you were aware that this past Friday, June 13, was special because there was also a full moon that night.  The combination of a full moon on a Friday the thirteenth is fairly rare.  It won’t happen again until 2049.  If I’m still around, I would be 107 the next time this combination occurs, so I really was looking forward to seeing the full moon Friday evening.

Unfortunately, Friday was rainy and cloudy.  Betsy and I went out shortly after the time of the moonrise, but we could see nothing but clouds.  We went out again an hour or so later and could see some stars over head, but still no moon.

A little later we finally got a glimpse of the moon playing peek-a-boo with the clouds and the trees.  I attempted to get some decent photos without a great deal of success.

Finally the moon poked through a clear patch of sky and I was able to get a fairly decent picture.  I’m glad I got to see this full moon, because I’m really not convinced that I’ll be around the next time there is a full moon on Friday the thirteenth.

While putting up the bird feeders one Monday evening in December, Betsy and I noticed the nearly-full moon rising through the trees.  I grabbed my camera and walked out onto the golf course to get a view without the trees blocking the view.

I went to my archives for these pictures of a beautiful Tennessee sky.  We were on the Cherohala Skyway on a gorgeous October day.  The autumn colors and the sky were both brilliant.  The moon in that blue sky was an added bonus.

Micro Moon

Did you see last week’s full moon?  It turns out that it was really a Micro Moon.  On November 28, 2012 the smallest Full Moon of 2012 reached its full phase only about 4 hours before its apogee, the most distant point from Earth in the Moon’s elliptical orbit.

We’ll have to wait until January 16, 2014, to see the next Micro Moon.  On that date the moon will reach its full phase within about three hours of apogee.

Did you see the full moon last Friday night?  It was the second full moon of the month, so it qualified as a blue moon.

I was beginning to think I would miss it, because the sky was very cloudy as the moon was coming up.

But sometimes patience has its rewards.  As the moon got higher, the clouds started to disperse.

The breaks in the clouds kept getting larger, and I could see more and more of the moon.

I was finally able to get a fairly decent picture of the blue moon.  We won’t have another one until 2015.

This has been a very hectic time for us with upcoming weddings, Dad’s birthday, and work on the house.  Betsy and I need a break to recharge our batteries, so, as some of you have done, we’re taking a blogging break.  We will be away from blogging until October 1.  I hope all of you have a very happy and wonderful September.

My Beautiful Bride likes crescent moons, so when she saw one early Wednesday (August 22) evening she said I should get a picture.  It never takes much to encourage me to get out my camera, so I went out and captured this photo.

I must admit that I’m a sucker when it comes to seeing the moon in a blue sky.  I can’t resist taking a picture (or several).  Last Friday the moon was almost overhead as the sun was setting.  The clouds to the east had a pretty peach glow from the setting sun.

Sometimes the clouds got in the way, but even then the scene was pretty enough that I kept snapping away.

A few minutes later the clouds and sun were both gone and I concentrated on the moon itself.  I must admit I like the craters I captured at the boundary between the dark and light sides of the moon.

Betsy enjoying snow in the mountains of Virginia. She was as beautiful then as she is now.

Someone is having a birthday on Sunday.  I can’t tell you who it is, but I will give you a couple of hints —

Hint #1: She still likes snow.
Hint #2:  She’s my Beautiful Bride.

I know it would make her very happy if you would pop over to her blog, Joyful Reflections, and wish her a Happy Birthday.

Things have been fairly hectic around here and I haven’t had a chance to get out with my camera as much as I would like.  So I went to my archives to get this picture of the moon in an early evening June sky over Fairfield Glade.  The picture was taken in June, 2010, and I like the fact that there is still some blue in the sky with that almost full moon.

An Almost-Super Moon

Betsy and I were in Simpsonville, South Carolina, on the Saturday night of the super moon.  Unfortunately there were heavy clouds and storms in Simpsonville that night, so we missed the super moon.

Fortunately Sunday night, at Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, was beautiful and clear.  The not-quite-so-super moon put in an appearance over the ocean almost opposite our room.  I was able to get this picture from the balcony of our room.

We watched the moon rise in the sky and lay a silver stream of light on the surface of the water.

The sight was so incredibly beautiful that we both felt it made up for missing the super moon the night before.

When going through some computer files the other day, I came across this photo of a nearly full moon in a blue sky.  It was taken in May, 2009, at Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.  Since I misfiled it, I thought it deserved to be shared on Skywatch Friday.
