Watery Wednesday # 65: Warwoman Creek Cascade

Betsy and I have been through Clayton, Georgia, several times on our waterfalling adventures.  One of the roads we’ve traveled has the intriguing name Warwoman Road (I would love to learn the origin of that name, wouldn’t you?).

On our last visit to Clayton in October, we found Warwoman Creek.  We didn’t find the waterfall we were looking, but we did find this cascade on Warwoman Creek.  I thought it was pretty enough to share on Watery Wednesday.

Watery Wednesday # 60: Hurricane Falls

Betsy and I have been to Tallulah Gorge State Park in Georgia twice this year.  We were there for the first time in June and liked it so much that we returned in October.

Actually the main reason we went back fits in very nicely with Watery Wednesday.  There is a dam at the head of Tallulah Gorge that restricts the flow of water through the gorge.  The picture above was taken in June and shows Hurricane Falls as it normally appears.

But a few times during the spring and fall the flood gates of the dam are open to allow the water to flow over the falls as it did before the dam was built.  We went back to see the waterfalls when there was an increased flow over them.

This picture was taken in October when the flood gates were open.  Both pictures were taken from the same location.  Can you see the difference a lot of water can make?

Earlier this month Betsy and I went back to northern Georgia to revisit the waterfalls in Tallulah Gorge and to visit some new ones for the first time.  One of our new waterfalls was Becky Branch Falls, near Clayton, Georgia.

Becky Branch Falls is near the Warwoman Dell Recreation Area east of Clayton.  The falls is reached by a steep, but short, trail from the parking area.  When we reached the falls we decided that the hike was definitely worth it.

Memories of Atlanta

Since my bride is away for most of this week, I’ve been looking over some pictures of our life together.  (Can you tell that I miss her?)

Three weeks before we were married in June, 2001, Betsy and I were invited to the wedding of the son of Betsy’s friend, Susan.  Susan is one of the Get-Away Gang that is with Betsy in Maggie Valley this week, and she and Betsy have been friends since grade school.  The wedding was in Atlanta and we were invited to the rehearsal dinner Friday night as well as the wedding on Saturday.

Since we were free for most of the day on Saturday, Betsy and I took advantage of the opportunity to visit Stone Mountain Park near Atlanta, which is where the picture above was taken.  In addition to admiring the carving on the mountain and the covered bridge, we took the tram to the top of the mountain.  (That was before we got serious about hiking — I’m sure Betsy would insist on hiking to the top nowadays.)

Memories of Atlanta

One of the advantages of having so much rain over the last few days is that I’ve had the opportunity to work on some of my older pictures that had been copied to disk to be worked on ‘later’.  Well, ‘later’ came this past week, and I have enjoyed working with pictures that I had practically forgotten about.

One of the folders I found was of pictures taken in Atlanta, Georgia, in June, 2001, about three weeks before Betsy and I were married.  We had been invited to the wedding of the oldest son of one of Betsy’s childhood friends.  Since Betsy and Susan, the mother, were good friends, we were invited to come down early for the rehearsal dinner on Friday evening.  I got to meet another of Betsy’s childhood friends, Nita, and learn some things about my future bride that I didn’t know (all good, of course).

Saturday morning Betsy and I went to Stone Mountain Park outside of Atlanta to enjoy the day and see some of the scenic attractions of that beautiful area.  After an enjoyable few hours at the park we went back to the city for the wedding and reception.

Middle DeSoto Falls

On our way to Florida earlier this month, Betsy and I did some hiking in the DeSoto Falls Scenic Area near Turner’s Corner, Georgia.  There we found a fairly easy trail along Frogtown Creek which led through the woods to Middle Desoto Falls.  The falls (above) is an 80-foot rollercoaster-like drop over four smooth ledges.

Middle DeSoto Falls is another of those smaller waterfalls in a beautiful setting that we like to visit.  The DeSoto Falls Scenic Area is named for the Spanish explorer Hernando DeSoto, who is said to have passed through this part of Georgia in the 1500’s.  Legend has it that early settlers found a piece of Spanish armor and attributed it to DeSoto’s band of explorers.

On our way to Florida last week Betsy and I visited some new waterfalls in north Georgia.  One of the nicest we saw was Falls on Waters Creek, near Turners Corner, Georgia.  The picture above was taken along a Forest Service road, but we were able to get a closer view by hiking down to the large flat rock seen in the center-right of this picture, which can be enlarged by clicking on it.

I really like the way the trees frame the waterfall in this Watery Wednesday view.

Our Prius — Definitely NOT a clunker

I’m sure Betsy and I will have quite a bit to say about our trip to Florida in the days ahead, but now I want to tell you about the unsung partner in all our travels.  There’s a lot of talk about clunkers nowadays, but our Prius — Mrs. P — is definitely not a clunker.

We got Mrs. P in February, 2005.  Since then we have traveled many miles — some of them on interstates and some on less-well maintained roads.  Mrs. P has successfully traveled along snow-covered forest service dirt roads in the mountains and successfully gotten over and through wash-outs that turned back jeeps.

Last Sunday we were in the mountains of north Georgia searching for some waterfalls.  We knew there was a stream with two waterfalls on them about two miles from a ranger station.  The sign in the photo above (enlarge the picture to read it more clearly) was on the opposite side of the road from the station.

Mrs. P handled the road with no problems.  I just could not resist taking this picture on our way back.  I wonder where Mrs. P will take us next?

Last week I shared Holcomb Creek Falls, which we visited on our anniversary trip to northeast Georgia.  After enjoying Holcomb Creek Falls we hiked another quarter-mile through the woods.  This part of the hike was uphill, but it led us to Ammons Creek Falls.  Ammons Creek Falls is not as tall as Holcomb Creek Falls, but it is still very pretty.

On the first afternoon of our anniversary trip last month, Betsy and I some hiking near Clayton, Georgia.  We hiked the Holcomb Creek Trail through a beautiful forest setting.  Some of the hemlock and poplar trees were three feet in diameter.

We hiked for about a half mile through the woods to reach our destination, which was the beautiful waterfall shown above.  Holcomb Creek Falls drops 120 feet with boulders the size of automobiles strewn about it’s lower levels.  We had this magnificent waterfall all to ourselves while we were there.

It was as we started back to the car that we realized we had a problem.  The hike to the falls, as I said, was very pleasant.  It was mostly downhill, which meant that the hike back was mostly uphill.  I’ll just say that we both slept well that night.
