Scenic Sunday #114: The Mountains

September 20, 2010

The mountains of western North Carolina, Burnsville, North Carolina. July 11, 2009.

This is my post for the Scenic Sunday meme, which shares beautiful scenes from around the world.  To see more Scenic Sunday posts, or to join and show your own pictures, click HERE.

Although Betsy and I go to the beach each year, we really like the mountains.  I guess that’s a good thing since we live in eastern Tennessee.  The mountains in the picture above are in western North Carolina.  This picture was taken in July near Burnsville, North Carolina.

My World: Obed River

July 27, 2010

Clear Creek Gorge in Obed Wild and Scenic River Park, Tennessee. July 25, 2010.

Sunday afternoon Betsy and I drove northeast of the Glade to visit the Obed Wild and Scenic River.  This is a relatively new addition to the National Park system (1976) and contains one of the few pristine areas in this part of the country.  The rugged and inhospitable terrain has limited settlements and land usage and there are few roads in the park.

The trail from the parking area to the overlook. July 25, 2010.

There is an overlook along one of few the roads through the park.  We’ve hiked to the overlook before, but Sunday we drove to a parking area along the top of a bluff and then hiked a short distance along a well-maintained trail to the overlook.

Clear Creek Gorge, July 25, 2010.

At the overlook we could look down on Clear Creek (one of the tributaries of the Obed River) as it flowed through its gorge.  There wasn’t a lot of water in the creek, but we could see people swimming in pools far below us.

Sunday was another beautiful, but hot, day here on the Plateau.  But it was a great day for visiting a beautiful part of our world.

My World: Grassy Cove

July 20, 2010

Grassy Cove, Tennessee. July 18, 2010.

Grassy Cove is a pretty area south of Crossville.  Our favorite back road south and east of our house takes us through the cove and we have often remarked about how pretty it is.  So when we had the opportunity to take a driving exploration of Grassy Cove, we set off to see what we could see.

Grassy Cove is a natural sinkhole and is one of the largest in the United States, measuring roughly 3 miles wide and 5 miles long.  Grassy Cove is listed as a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service.

Grassy Cove is rural with many small farms.  I like the old barn on this farm.  The mountain and sky in the background is pretty neat as well.

We didn’t see a house around this barn, but even with the patched roof it presents a great picture of rural Tennessee.

A Visit to Mount Magazine

May 27, 2010

I’m not sure where all the time goes.  It seems as if I just get started on something when the late news and weather is over and it’s time to go to bed.  The weather has been great — the weeds in the flower beds are growing like crazy!

Since I have been running out of time each day, I have gone to the archives to make this collage from our visit to Mount Magazine in Arkansas in 2009.  Mount Magazine is the highest point in Arkansas and contains some wonderful views, waterfalls and hiking trails.  It also has a great restaurant.  Betsy and I have spent the day at Mount Magazine on every Arkansas visit for the past three or four years.

Please keep Betsy in your prayers.  She has been having a great deal of pain with her left knee and finds it hard to put any weight on it at all.  We’ve been to a couple of doctors and she will have an MRI later this afternoon.  Hopefully the MRI will give the orthopedic surgeon some answers.

Scenic Sunday #97: Evening in the Mountains

May 23, 2010

Late afternoon in western North Carolina. July 10, 2009.

This is my post for the Scenic Sunday meme, which shares beautiful scenes from around the world.  To see more Scenic Sunday posts, or to join and show your own pictures, click HERE.

Our yard and garden has been keeping me busy, so I haven’t had much time to work on pictures.  As a result I’ve gone back to my archives for this picture.

We were in the mountains of western North Carolina last July visiting family.  The day had been overcast, but in the late afternoon we were treated to rays of sunlight breaking through the clouds.

Scenic Sunday #86: Hoarfrost on the Mountain

Hoarfrost on Mount Magazine, Arkansas. February 23, 2010.

This picture was taken about two weeks ago on Mount Magazine in Arkansas.  This is another of our favorite hiking places in Arkansas.  Of course the fact that the lodge in the state park has an excellent restaurant with a terrific view doesn’t hurt either.

The day we were there was cold — just about perfect for visiting waterfalls and hiking.  But as we got higher up the mountain (Mount Magazine is the highest point in Arkansas) the temperature kept dropping.  When we got to the loop road at the top of the mountain we began to notice hoar frost in some of the trees.  Each time the road climb a few feet, more of the trees supported a coat of hoar frost.

When we came to an overlook we stopped to get some pictures.  The morning was cloudy, but the trees covered with hoar frost nestled among the bluffs and rocks of the mountain made a very beautiful scene.

I’m grateful for the beauty that can be found at any time in our wonderful world.

Turtle Rocks

March 4, 2010

Turtle Rocks at Petit Jean State Park, Arkansas. February 24, 2010.

When Betsy and I visited Petit Jean State Park in Arkansas last week, we hiked a couple of trails which were new for us.  One of the trails was Rock House Trail, which is fairly short, but did lead us through the “Turtle Rocks” shown above.

“Turtle rocks” are mounded structures resembling a turtle shell which have been carved in thick sandstones.  Turtle Rocks are found only in Hartshorne Sandstone, which is found at several locations in the Arkansas River Valley.

It’s not known how the “turtle rocks” were created, but they are certainly are interesting.

Can you see the turtles through the trees?

As we followed another trail we spotted on “turtle” on another, as shown in the picture above.

The “Turtle Rocks” of Petit Jean certainly added to our day at the park.

Skywatch Friday: Unaka Mountain

December 18, 2009

Hoar Frost on Unaka Mountain, Tennessee. November 27, 2009.

This is my post for Skywatch Friday, a meme for sharing views of the sky from all over the world.  To see more, or to join and share your own photos of the sky, click HERE.

Betsy and I were in East Tennessee the day after Thanksgiving on a waterfalling trip.  The weather forecast had called for snow flurries and Betsy had hoped that we would see some snow, but there was none.  Friday morning was cold but clear.

The closest Betsy came to seeing snow was this hoar frost on the top of Unaka Mountain.  I had to get a picture of something white for my beautiful bride, so I snapped this picture from the road we were on.

I’m not that thrilled with the hoar frost, but that clear blue sky is beautiful.

Sky Watch Friday: Carolina Morning

November 20, 2009

A western North Carolina morning. May 29, 2009.

This is my post for Skywatch Friday, a meme for sharing views of the sky from all over the world.  To see more, or to join and share your own photos of the sky, click HERE.

I went to my archives for this picture, but Betsy and I enjoy the mountains of western North Carolina so much that its always a pleasure to check out these scenes.

The picture above was taken near Otto, North Carolina, back  in May.  The day had started out rather dreary, but the blue breaking through the clouds when this picture was taken hints that “Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina in the morning”!

Skywatch Friday: Sky Over Carolina Mountains

Evening sky in western North Carolina. July 10, 2009.

I haven’t had an opportunity to get sky pictures this week, so I’ve gone to my archives for this picture.  It was taken in the mountains of western North Carolina this past July.  It had been an overcast day, but as evening approached the sun could occasionally be seen peeking through the clouds.  There are no obvious breaks in the clouds in this picture, but if you look closely you can see sun rays beaming down on the mountains.
