When Betsy and I visit Mt. Nebo in Arkansas, we tend to get up a little earlier than usual so we can drive to Sunrise Point to watch the sun come up.

If the visibility is good, we can see much of the Arrkansas River valley below us before the sun makes its appearance.

In late February we can catch our first glimpse of the sun just beyond the end of Petit Jean Mountain across the valley.

It doesn’t take long before the sun is completely up filling the sky with light reflected in the waters of the river below us.  It’s always a gorgeous sight, and gets our day off to a wonderful start.

Not every sunset on Mount Nebo is perfect, in spite of some of the pictures we’ve posted from there.  Fog came rolling in late one afternoon a couple of years ago, and we were afraid  we wouldn’t see anything at all of the setting sun.  The fog was fairly thick, but I got this photo of the setting sun before it completely disappeared.  I like the reflected light on the wet rock near the bottom of the photo.

There are many things that Betsy and I like about Mount Nebo in Arkansas.  We always stay at ‘our’ cabin on the rim of the mountain.  The main reason we go in late February is that we can enjoy sunsets from the patio of the cabin.

This picture, taken last year, shows the sun sinking behind the mountains to the west of Mount Nebo.  ‘Our’ cabin is in silhouette on the left of the picture.

Betsy and I were at Mount Nebo in Arkansas last week.  We stay at the same cabin each year, since we have beautiful views at sunset from the porch at the back of the cabin.  We can sit there and look down into the valley below us and see the mountains stretching off in the distance.  When the setting sun colors the sky and sends our sun rays, we feel that we’re capturing a glimpse of heaven.

As I’ve mentioned several times, Betsy and I love to watch sunsets from ‘our’ cabin on Mount Nebo in Arkansas.  It’s nice to sit on the patio and enjoy the setting sun.

It’s possible to see sunrises on Mount Nebo as well, but it involves more effort.  Not only do we need to get up very early, we need to drive to Sunrise Point.  But we do that at least once each time we visit Mount Nebo.

All of these pictures were taken on the morning of March 2, 2012.  Yes, we did have to get up early, but I think it was all worth it.

As many of you know, Betsy and I love Mt. Nebo in Arkansas.  We’ve gone there at least once each year for several years now, always staying in the same cabin.  When we go in February or March, we can enjoy the sunsets from the patio of the cabin.  I took this picture at sunset in March of last year.

This is the scene Betsy and I enjoyed on our first evening on Mt. Nebo in Arkansas.  We were on the back porch of ‘our’ cabin as we were treated to a spectacular sunset.  The color in the sky was simply amazing.

Last week Betsy and I were in Arkansas.  We try to go there about this time each year.  We have a favorite cabin on the top of Mt. Nebo which we think of as ‘our’ cabin.  The views from the cabin, especially the sunsets, are spectacular this time of the year.

If you know anything about us, you know that it is hard for us to travel anywhere without looking for waterfalls to visit.  This trip was no different.  We drove from our home to Arkadelphia in southwestern Arkansas, where we spent the night.  We then visited three waterfalls — Panther Bluff, Cossatot, and Shady Lake Cascade — before heading north to Mt. Nebo State Park.

Although we spent most of our time at Mt. Nebo, we did take day trips to Mount Magazine State Park and Petit Jean State Park.  We did some hiking in both parks, especially Petit Jean, where we hiked to visit beautiful Cedar Falls.

We had a wonderful visit in Arkansas, as we always do.  We had some concerns about the severe weather back here in Tennessee, as we heard of tornadoes near Crossville.  We also had some interesting moments heading home as we kept hearing tornado warnings along our route on Friday.  But fortunately we made it safe and sound and found everything in order at home, except for flashing digital clocks because the electricity had gone off.

Pictures will follow.

Scenic Sunday: Arkansas Sunrise

Sunrise from Sunrise Point, Mount Nebo, Arkansas. December 4, 2008.

The yard has been keeping me very busy, so I went to the archives for this week’s post.

When we’re on vacation I like to sleep in (in truth I like to sleep in any morning, but that’s another story), but sometimes getting up in the early morning hours is worth the effort.

One such time was when we were at Mount Nebo in Arkansas in  December, 2008.  We got up before sunrise and drove to Sunrise Point to watch the sun come up.  Shortly after we got there we were treated to the scene in the picture above.  The horizon turned a gorgeous orange-gold with the sun beginning to peep above the mountains on the other side of the valley.

A few minutes later the star-burst and fiery clouds announced the arrival of the sun.

In another few moments the sun cleared the mountain tops and began its climb into the sky.  That was definitely worth getting up to see.

I’ve mentioned before that the weather wasn’t exactly cooperative during our trip to Mount Nebo in Arkansas.  The day we drove there was partly cloudy, but when we went to Sunset Point we found that the sun was setting behind a thick bank of clouds.  But those same clouds gave us the beautiful sight in the picture above.

Later the clouds parted enough to allow us to see this golden glow from our cabin.  Sunsets from Mount Nebo are always special.
