Return to Mt. Nebo

My Beautiful Bride and I have been going to Mt. Nebo State Park in Arkansas for almost 20 years.  We’ve missed going a time or two, but we try to get there in February so that we can enjoy the sunsets from ‘our’ cabin on top of the mountain.  This picture was taken in 2016, but it does a good job of showing why we keep going back.  It’s our little piece of heaven on earth.

Mt. Nebo Sunset

September 6, 2022

There are many reasons we keep going back to Mt. Nebo State Park in Arkansas, but one of  main reasons is the magnificent sunsets we can enjoy from ‘our’ cabin on top of the mountain.  Although this picture was taken several years ago, I hope you’ll agree it makes going back very worthwhile.

A Foggy Morning Sunrise

I’ve often talked about how much Betsy and I love watching the sunsets when we visit Mt. Nebo State Park in Arkansas. But we also enjoy catching the sunrises from Sunrise Point in the park.

A few years ago we were greeted by a blanket of fog in the valley below Sunrise Point. As you can see from the photo above, it was almost hard to tell that there was a valley and city below us.

As the sky got lighter we began seeing the trees and the tops of hills in the valley below. In the distance we could make out the mountains on the other side of the valley.

Fields and buildings began coming into view

Finally parts of the Arkansas River came into view, reflecting the red of the sky above it.

What a gorgeous way to begin a day!

A Mountain-Top Sunset

One of the main reasons My Beautiful Bride and I like going to Mt. Nebo in February is that the cabin we rent offers some gorgeous views of the setting sun that time of year. Often, when there are relatively few clouds, the sky is streaked with gorgeous color.

But even a very cloudy day can provide dramatic sunsets, as this picture taken a few Februarys ago shows.

A Mountaintop Sunset

One of the joys for Betsy and I when we visit Mt. Nebo State Park in Arkansas is the sunsets we can enjoy from ‘our’ cabin when we visit in February or March. All the pictures in this post were taken on February 12, 2013.

Regardless of what we do during the day, we try to get back to the cabin before sunset. Sometimes, as in the picture above, the late afternoon gives a hint of the glorious sunset to come.

As the sun drops lower, a look to the south across the valley shows the reds, oranges and pinks of the clouds above.

For a moment the sun seems to pause just as it touches the mountains to the west and baths everything in a golden glow.

Then the sun is gone, but it leaves a reminder of the beauty of God’s creation in the sky.

Down Memory Lane: Pedestal Rocks

February 11, 2020

When Betsy and I would visit Mt. Nebo in Arkansas, one of our favorite places to visit and hike was the Pedestal Rocks Scenic Area off of Scenic Route 7 north of Mt. Nebo.

Pedestal Rocks features “mushroom’ shaped columns sculptured by wind and weather. The “pedestals” are both fascinating and beautiful.

Pedestal Rocks is a great place to hike on a beautiful winter day.

In addition to unique shapes, many of the pedestals have lichen growing along one or more sides. Some of the colors are varied, vivid and beautiful.

Arkansas Sunsets

April 3, 2018

Betsy and I have been fortunate to be able to visit Mount Nebo State Park in Arkansas in late winter or early spring for the past ten years or so. We like many things about Mount Nebo — the hiking, for example — but what keeps us going back in ‘our’ cabin. We have stayed in the same cabin each time we’ve gone.

It’s perfect for relaxing, enjoying the scenery, and enjoying a nice fire in the fireplace in the evening. But it’s main attraction, at least at the time of year we visit, is the gorgeous sunsets we can enjoy from the back porch.

The slideshow above is made up of photos taken one evening during our visit in 2008. They can’t compare to seeing the sunsets in person, but I think they do a reasonably good job of showing the beauty we enjoy.

Hiking the Rim Trail

June 13, 2017

(Note:  All pictures may be enlarged by clicking on them once or twice.)

Betsy and I visit Mt. Nebo State Park in Arkansas early each year.  We have many reasons for continuing to go there:  a beautiful little cabin that we get each year, gorgeous sunrises and sunsets, a peaceful and quiet atmosphere in which we can relax and enjoy each other’s company, and beautiful views.

Another thing we do its hike along the Rim Trail, which circles the mountain top just below the rim.  We don’t always hike all the way around the mountain, but we do cover most parts of the trail while we’re at Mt. Nebo.

There is access to the Rim Trail near our cabin, and the views beckons us each morning, as can be seen in the picture above.

On a clear day we can see Mt. Magazine in the distance, another favorite place we like to visit.

When we hike from the cabin toward Sunset Point we pass this gnarled old tree standing guard along the trail.

With all the beautiful views along the Rim Trail there are times when we just have to stop and soak them all in.

Sunrise, Sunset

Mt. Nebo State Park in Arkansas in one of the favorite places Betsy and I visits.  We go there every year, usually in mid-to-late February or early March.

We have several reasons for going to Mt. Nebo that time of the year.  One reason is that our favorite cabin is usually available.  There are very few people around, so we feel as if we have the mountain top to ourselves.  Finally, that is a great time of the year to view both sunrises and sunsets.   The picture above is the view from Sunrise Point just before the sun poked above the horizon.

We have to get up early to get to Sunrise Point before dawn starts to break, but although it is sometimes hard to leave a nice bed, the view is worth it — even while the world is still sleeping.

We have a perfect view of sunsets from the back of our cabin, as the photo above shows.  This was taken on a perfectly clear day just as the sun slipped below the mountains to the west.

Clear days can give amazing sunsets, but an overcast day has it’s own special beauty.  This picture was taken on an afternoon when we didn’t see much of the sun,  but there was no doubt that the heavens were declaring the glory of God.

Is it any wonder that this is a very special place to us?

If you visited here very often, you know that one of our favorite spots is Mt. Nebo State Park in Arkansas.  We get the same cabin for each visit, and we can sit on the back porch and enjoy some spectacular sunsets.

Sometimes the sky is cloudy, which creates magnificent cloudscapes in the sky.  The evening I took these pictures (February 26, 2014) was perfectly clear, and the color of the sky was simply magnificent.
