Home From Arkansas

March 1, 2010

Betsy awaiting the sunset outside our cabin on Mount Nebo. February 23, 2010.

It’s nice to be home.

Betsy and I had a wonderful few days in Arkansas.  It  is difficult to decide on a single high point for our time there.  We was the sun (something we still haven’t been able to do in Tennessee), beautiful waterfalls, glorious sunrises, majestic sunsets, and fascinating rock formations.

We stayed at our favorite cabin in Mount Nebo State Park.  In late February the sun sets directly opposite the back deck.  We did have to go to the other side of the mountain to see the sunrise, but even that was definitely worth while.

Although we stayed at Mount Nebo, we also visited Mount Magazine and Petit Jean, two other nearby state parks.  We had been to each before, but we managed to see something new in each park.

We had thought we would return to Garvan Gardens on our way to Nebo to enjoy the spring flowers, but the cold weather had delayed most of the flowers, so we decided to check out some waterfalls in the Ouachita Mountains.  We had not been in that region before, and enjoyed seeing new sights and visiting new waterfalls.

Since both of us have new cameras you can imagine the number of pictures we took  (then again, maybe you can’t!).  We’ll share some of those with you in the days ahead.

Scenic Sunday # 84: Mount Nebo, Arkansas

Sunset on Mount Nebo, Arkansas. December 2, 2008.

This is my post for the Scenic Sunday meme, which shares beautiful scenes from around the world.  To see more Scenic Sunday posts, or to join and show your own pictures, click HERE.

The picture above was taken at Sunset Point in Mount Nebo State Park, Arkansas.  Betsy and I are leaving for Mount Nebo early Sunday morning.  We have a favorite cabin on the mountain top and we always stay there when we visit the mountain.  This will be our sixth visit.  Can you tell that we like it there?

There are a couple of waterfalls on the mountain and several nice hiking trails, so I don’t think we’ll run out of things to do.  If we do decide to get off the mountain there are plenty of other waterfalls and beautiful scenes in the area.

I won’t be doing any new posts until we get back home.  I will have my iPod Touch with me, and if we can get internet service, I’ll visit as best I can.

Scenic Sunday # 79: Arkansas Sunrise

January 17, 2010

Sunrise Point, Mount Nebo State Park, Arkansas. December 4, 2008.

This is my post for the Scenic Sunday meme, which shares beautiful scenes from around the world.  To see more Scenic Sunday posts, or to join and show your own pictures, click HERE.

Mount Nebo State Park in Arkansas is one of our special places to visit.  We have a favorite cabin on the mountain top and try to get there each year.  Two of the nice features of the park is that there are perfect places to view sunrises and sunsets.

This picture was taken in December, 2008, at Sunrise Point.  If you look closely on the left of the picture you can see the Arkansas River in the valley below.  But the main feature of this photo is the sun, rising over the mountains to the east, looking like a star.

Scenic Sunday # 35

The view from 'our' cabin on Mt. Nebo. March 10, 2009.

This is my post for the weekly meme Scenic Sunday.  To see more Scenic Sunday pictures, or to join the fun and post your own pictures, click HERE.

Last week I showed a picture of ‘our’ cabin on Mt. Nebo in Arkansas.  We went back there to celebrate my birthday and to do some hiking.

For the first time since we’ve started going to Mt. Nebo, the weather didn’t really cooperate.  It was over 80° and sunny on the day we arrived, but then the clouds, rain and ice moved in.

Although we didn’t get to do as much hiking and waterfalling as we had planned, we still had a wonderful time.  We did see four new waterfalls and saw nine all together.  And the falls we had seen before had much more water this time.

The picture above, which can be enlarged,  is the view from the back of ‘our’ cabin.  Actually I was on the Rim Trail behind (and slightly below) the cabin when I took this picture.  Even though it was a gray cloudy day, the view of the valley and the mountains beyond is still fantastic.

And, yes, in spite of our weather woes, we will be going back!

Scenic Sunday # 34

'Our' cabin on Mt. Nebo. November 27, 2006.

'Our' cabin on Mt. Nebo. November 27, 2006.

This is my post for the weekly meme Scenic Sunday.  To see more Scenic Sunday pictures, or to join the fun and post your own pictures, click HERE.

The cabin in the photo above is Cabin #60 in Mt. Nebo State Park, Arkansas.  But Betsy and I refer to it as ‘our’ cabin on Mt. Nebo.  We’ve stayed in this cabin four times already and are going back this week for our fifth stay.

Mt. Nebo was a favorite of Betsy’s BG — ‘Before George’ — although she never stayed in Cabin 60.  Betsy took me to Mt. Nebo for the first time in 2006, and that was the first time we stayed in this cabin.

The cabin is just the right size for two.  It has a fireplace in the living room, which makes Betsy very happy.  The cabin is on the edge of the mountain top and has a fantastic view of the valley below.  And we are often visited by deer in the evening.

Betsy and I will be gone for the entire week — hiking, searching for waterfalls, and enjoying the beautiful scenery.  We hope you all have a wonderful week and we’ll see you next Sunday.

Skywatch Friday # 34

March 5, 2009
The view from Sunset Point, Mt. Nebo, Arkansas. November, 2007.

The view from Sunset Point, Mt. Nebo, Arkansas. November, 2007.

I took the picture above in November, 2007, from Sunset Point at Mt. Nebo State Park in Arkansas.  Betsy and I had gone to the point to view the sunset and we found this pretty scene when we arrived.  The sun had not yet dropped to the mountains in west but was hidden behind the high clouds.

I decided to use this picture because Mt. Nebo is one of our favorite places to visit, and because we will be going back there next week to celebrate my birthday.  I would anticipate getting several more sky watch pictures while we’re there.  If I’m lucky we’ll also get some hiking in and will see some new waterfalls.

A Sunrise Photo

Last week I posted a sunset picture.  This week I’ll prove that I can get up to see a sunrise by posting a sunrise picture.  To see more sunrise/sunset pictures click on the logo above to go to the Sunday Sunrise/Sunset website.

This picture was also taken on Mount Nebo in Arkansas.  I got this picture by going to Sunrise Point on the mountain.  Although we got there just as it was beginning to get light, we had to wait some time to get this picture.  The sun has popped up above a layer of clouds.  The mountains on the other side of the valley can be seen below the sun and clouds.

I’ll have to admit that it takes a little more effort to get a sunrise picture,  especially on a cold, windy morning.  But I think the effort was worth it.

A Sunset Photo

This is the first time I’ve tried something like this, so I guess it is an experiment on my part.  Carla is the person that brought this meme to my attention, so I thought I would give it a try.  You can go directly to Sunday Sunrise/Sunset by clicking on the logo above or by clicking HERE.  At the website you can find links to other sunrise/sunset photos.

This picture is one that I took last November from Mt. Nebo State Park in Arkansas.

Sunset from Mt. Nebo, Arkansas. November, 2007.

I chose this picture because I like it and because Betsy and I are going back there this week.

Betsy has been going to Mt. Nebo for longer than she has known me, but she took me there for the first time in November, 2006.  This trip will be our fourth.  We always stay in a beautiful cabin on top of the mountain where we can enjoy the mountain views and the sunsets.  Up there on that mountaintop it is almost always quiet and it is easy to enjoy the beauty and grandeur of God’s creation.

We’ll be gone for almost a week, but we should get home sometime Friday evening.  In the meantime I hope you all have a very good week.
