Last May, while Betsy and I were at Ocean Isle Beach in North Carolina, we were treated to the moon rising over the ocean right across from our room.  It was a beautiful sight that we enjoyed from our balcony for a couple of clear nights.  I don’t have the best of cameras, but the picture above is a wonderful reminder of a special night at the beach.

Our temperatures finally got into the 40s yesterday and most of the snow is gone.  I’m sure we’ll get more, but I yesterday was a very pleasant day for being outdoors.

There have been quite a few ‘thinking of spring’ posts lately and I’m joining that number by posting a picture of Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.  But since it will be several months  before we’ll be able to get back there to enjoy the warm sunshine, I’m showing the beach on a rainy morning with storm clouds overhead.

I’m grateful for the varied beauty and moods of the skies over our heads.

I know that it is definitely chilly in Florida these days, but this picture was taken at Ormond Beach back in August.  This is what the sky (and ocean) looked like early in the morning on Betsy’s birthday.

I am grateful for the new opportunities that are present with each new morning.

Skywatch Friday: Unaka Mountain

December 18, 2009

Hoar Frost on Unaka Mountain, Tennessee. November 27, 2009.

Betsy and I were in East Tennessee the day after Thanksgiving on a waterfalling trip.  The weather forecast had called for snow flurries and Betsy had hoped that we would see some snow, but there was none.  Friday morning was cold but clear.

The closest Betsy came to seeing snow was this hoar frost on the top of Unaka Mountain.  I had to get a picture of something white for my beautiful bride, so I snapped this picture from the road we were on.

I’m not that thrilled with the hoar frost, but that clear blue sky is beautiful.

Skywatch Friday: Galveston Sunset

This picture was taken on Galveston Island, Texas, in 2007 before Hurricane Ike did so much damage on the island.  I like the silhouettes of the palm trees against sunset afterglow.

Sky Watch Friday: Carolina Morning

A western North Carolina morning. May 29, 2009.

I went to my archives for this picture, but Betsy and I enjoy the mountains of western North Carolina so much that its always a pleasure to check out these scenes.

The picture above was taken near Otto, North Carolina, back  in May.  The day had started out rather dreary, but the blue breaking through the clouds when this picture was taken hints that “Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina in the morning”!

Skywatch Friday: Sky Over Carolina Mountains

I haven’t had an opportunity to get sky pictures this week, so I’ve gone to my archives for this picture.  It was taken in the mountains of western North Carolina this past July.  It had been an overcast day, but as evening approached the sun could occasionally be seen peeking through the clouds.  There are no obvious breaks in the clouds in this picture, but if you look closely you can see sun rays beaming down on the mountains.

Skywatch Friday: Blue Skies

Blue skies over Fairfield Glade. November 2, 2009.

When we are under the influence of a high pressure system, we’re treated to beautiful blue skies.  We have had clear blue skies for most of this week, as you can see from the picture above.

You will also see that many of the branches of the trees around our house are now bear.  That explains all the leaves that we’ve been contending with on the ground.

There wasn’t much of a breeze when I took this picture, but I still think that Old Glory against a blue sky is a beautiful sight.

Skywatch Friday: An Autumn Sky

A beautiful autumn sky, Cherohala Skyway, Tennessee. October 25, 2009.

Because of the rockslide on I-40, Betsy and i came home by coming from North Carolina to Tennessee on the Cherohala Skyway.  The scenery along the skyway is beautiful any time, but this particular day the autumn colors were stunning, especially along the middle elevations.

The picture above has just about everything you could ask for on a beautiful autumn afternoon:  bright colored leaves, a clear blue sky, and, if you look closely (the picture can be enlarged), a beautiful moon in that blue sky.

Since Betsy is away in the mountains of North Carolina, I thought I would share this picture of the sky and mountains taken earlier this year.  Betsy is in Maggie Valley and this picture was taken north of Asheville, but the sky and mountains are majestic in both places.
