This is my third and final collage of our daylilies. The first two collages are HERE and HERE. We still have a few blossoms, which we continue to enjoy. We’ve already made plans to add more daylilies next year.

Our Daylilies 3
July 16, 2009Our Daylilies 2
July 9, 2009The last of our daylilies bloomed yesterday. I showed a collage of some of our daylilies a couple of days ago. I enjoyed making that collage so much that I decided I would make another one showing six more of our beauties. We had seventeen different varieties in bloom this year, so I’ll probably post one more collage at some future date.
Consider yourself warned!
Why Deer Aren’t Always Welcome
June 30, 2009Isn’t the rose above beautiful? Well, it was beautiful until we had some visitors early Monday morning. These visitors just love to nibble on new rose leaves and buds. Needless to say, I’m not too happy about their visit.
We often see deer in the Glade. They travel through vacant lots and the golf course behind our house. Most of the time they are quite adorable. But not now.
Deer are protected in the Glade and I don’t have a problem with that. I just have a problem with deer eating my roses. Fences aren’t permitted where we live. For several years we have been successfully using a product called Liquid Fence to protect our flowers. We haven’t had any problems until now. Monday morning’s visitors munched on several
Hush Little Baby
June 29, 2009Our roses aren’t producing a lot of blossoms right now, but our other flowers are doing a good job of filling in the gaps. We’ve been enjoying lilies and daylilies for a couple of weeks now. They’re giving us lots of beautiful color and delight fragrances.
Betsy is highlighting some of the lilies in our garden today. The picture above is one of our daylilies, Hush Little Baby. Daylily blossoms only last for a single day, but they sure are pretty for that day.
A Hot Day on the Plateau
June 20, 2009It was almost unbearably hot here on the Plateau yesterday. It got so bad that the Weather Service issued a special alert about the heat. They warned of a heat index between 100 and 105. I’m not sure it got quite that high at the house, but it was definitely warm. We even turned on the air conditioning for the first time this season. We have great cross-ventilation in our house and rarely use the ac. I just hope yesterday wasn’t a harbinger of things to come.
I got the front yard mowed and the roses watered, but that was about the extent of my outside work. We have many weeds that need attention, but they will just have to wait.
But all is not lost in the garden. The lilies are doing well, and since I had time to work inside I made the collage above to share with all of you. The collage can be enlarged by clicking on it.
They’re baa . . . ck!
June 18, 2009Japanese Beetles are Public Enemy Number One for rose growers. The beetles can devour a rose blossom faster than anything I’ve ever seen. Unfortunately I’ve never lived in an area that did not have Japanese beetles. It has been very warm here for the past few days and I have been checking for beetles each day. Yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon I found several eating away.
The insect known as Japanese beetles were first found in the U. S. in New Jersey in 1916. Until that time, they were known to occur only in Japan where it is not a major pest.
Adult beetles emerge from the ground and begin feeding on plants in June. Activity is most intense over a 4 to 6 week period beginning in late June, after which the beetles gradually die off. Individual beetles live about 30 to 45 days (unless I catch up with them first). The beetles are most active on warm, sunny days, and prefer plants that are in direct sunlight. It sounds as if they were designed to eat roses!
I do my best to get the beetles off our roses in the morning when they are relatively sluggish. I usually pick them off and squeeze . That seems to be as effective as any other method, but for some reason I can’t get Betsy to help me!
It looks like it will be an interesting few weeks.
By the way, I did not take the picture above — I found it on the web.
My World # 36: Lilies
June 16, 2009This is my post for the My World meme. It is hosted by Klaus, Ivar, Sandy, Wren, Louise and Fishing Guy. To see more of our world or to join and share your part of the world, click HERE.
Most of you know that Betsy and I grow roses. But we have other flowers as well. This week most of our lilies are in full bloom. These lilies are opposite a sliding door to the deck and when the house is open the fragrance inside is heavenly.
Who Says Lilies Are Short Plants?
June 15, 2009As most of you know, Betsy and I grow roses, but we also have lilies as well. As you can see in the picture above, the lilies are now in bloom. I couldn’t resist getting this picture of Betsy looking up at one of them.
I must admit that I cheated just a little with this picture. The lily is in a raised flower bed and Betsy is on a walkway beside the flower bed. The lily plant is really only about five feet tall. But if you look in the upper right-hand corner you’ll see part of a lily that is even taller. The white lily is just under six feet tall.
But regardless of the height of the lilies we think they both look good and have a wonderful fragrance.
The View In Our Front Yard
June 4, 2009If you have visited here on a regular basis you may be tired of hearing about and seeing roses. But Betsy and I enjoy them and enjoy growing them and we can’t help ourselves in wanting to share them. The picture above was taken Tuesday from the edge of our driveway. We rather like the view.
We Came Home to This
June 1, 2009When Betsy and I got home Saturday night from our trip to North Carolina we found the beauty above in our rose garden. Wildfire is one of our favorite roses, but I’m not sure any picture can do it justice. Wildfire is a red-orange-yellow blend and which color is dominant depends somewhat on the lighting.
But trust me — Wildfire is a beautiful rose.
