Scenic Sunday: A Village in New Mexico

Laguna, New Mexico, and the surrounding countryside. June 13, 2011.

Our trip last month was the first time I had been in New Mexico, and I found the scenery to be fascinating.  Some people might say that the landscape is desolate, but the wide open spaces under a clear blue sky were very appealing to me.  The green we see in this part of Tennessee was missing, but the different shades of brown were interesting in their own way.

When we spotted a little village on a ridge away from the interstate I had to stop and get a picture.  The village, Laguna, New Mexico, is a former Indian Pueblo village west of Albuquerque.  In 2000 it had a population of 423.

The picture above makes the village seem almost insignificant compared to the open spaces around it and the mountains in the background.

My telephoto lens revealed some of the homes in the village and the church overlooking them.

The yard has been keeping me very busy, so I went to the archives for this week’s post.

When we’re on vacation I like to sleep in (in truth I like to sleep in any morning, but that’s another story), but sometimes getting up in the early morning hours is worth the effort.

One such time was when we were at Mount Nebo in Arkansas in  December, 2008.  We got up before sunrise and drove to Sunrise Point to watch the sun come up.  Shortly after we got there we were treated to the scene in the picture above.  The horizon turned a gorgeous orange-gold with the sun beginning to peep above the mountains on the other side of the valley.

A few minutes later the star-burst and fiery clouds announced the arrival of the sun.

In another few moments the sun cleared the mountain tops and began its climb into the sky.  That was definitely worth getting up to see.

Scenic Sunday: The World Turned Upside

The Surrender Field at Yorktown, Virginia. June 22, 2007.

This peaceful — and scenic — spot near Yorktown, Virginia, was the site of the surrender of the British army of Lord Cornwallis to the allied armies of America and France on October 19, 1781.

The British had been trapped in Yorktown by the Allies on September 28, 1781. Formal siege operations began o September 30, 1781, and the Americans and French began bombarding British positions on October 9.  On October 14 the Americans and French captured two redoubts (small fortified positions) in front of the British lines, which made the British position untenable.

When the British actually surrendered, French troops lined on side of the road in the picture above, and the Americans lined the other side.  The British laid down their arms and flags in the field on the far side of the road.

Tradition says that as the British marched down the road to the surrender site, their bands played a tune called “The World Turned Upside Down”.

Scenic Sunday: Chattooga River

The Chattooga River is a National Wild and Scenic River which forms the boundary between South Carolina and Georgia.  There are national forests (Sumter and Chattahoochee) on both banks, which makes the river area attractive for hiking and wilderness activities.  The river is also one of the top whitewater destinations in the southeast.

Betsy and I just got back from a wonderful week at Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.  The view from our room was gorgeous, as you can see from the picture above.  The weather was nearly perfect, and the seafood was delicious.  Is it any wonder that we escape there whenever possible?

This past Thursday Betsy and I went to Fall Creek Falls State Park here in Tennessee.  Fall Creek Falls is one of our favorite places to visit.  We had our first ‘big’ date there on April 21, 2001, and we’ve gotten back there on the anniversary just about every year since.  The picture above shows Fall Creek Falls, one of six waterfalls in the park.

It was this first date that got us started ‘collecting’ waterfalls.  We’ve visited over 430 different waterfalls in the past ten years.

I also got my first kiss on that day — a tradition that I’ve happily continued.

This past Thursday Betsy and I returned to the Biltmore Estate near Asheville, North Carolina.  We went to see the tulips as part of their Festival of Flowers, but once we got there we were so taken by the beautiful azaleas and dogwoods in bloom that we checked out the Azalea Garden first.  The picture above was taken near the start of the path through Azalea Garden.  The colors were absolutely spectacular.

Scenic Sunday #142: Foggy Morning Sunrise

The weather wasn’t exactly cooperative when we went to Arkansas this year.  I think we had more rain, fog and mist than we’ve ever had.  But even those conditions made for some interesting pictures, at least as far as I was concerned.

Friday morning Betsy and I got up to see the sunrise.  But when we got to Sunrise Point we found clouds in sky and fog in the valley below.  As the sun came up we could see a band of light between the clouds and fog, and the bright orange color told us that the sun was indeed rising.

View from Sunrise Point, Mt. Nebo State Park, Arkansas. April 1, 2011.

As the sun got higher the light got brighter.  The clouds took on a scalloped appearance and the fog in the valley began to break up.  In many ways it seemed that we were all alone at the top of the world.

On a more personal note, later today (Monday) I have an appointment with a neurosurgeon.  A recent MRI showed signs of ‘chronic fairly severe degenerative disc disease’ and ‘moderate to severe facet arthritis’.  I’m the first to confess that I don’t know what this means as far as future gardening and hiking is concerned, but any prayers and good thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

Last week Betsy and I spent several days at our favorite cabin on Mount Nebo State Park in Arkansas.  Mount Nebo is a flat-topped mountain, and ‘our’ cabn sits near the rim on the southwest side of the mountain.  We have a marvelous view of the valley below, as can be seen from the picture above.
