Betsy and I drove into the Ozark National Forest of Arkansas on a gravel Forest Service road to visit Falling Water Falls o Valentine Day. We had visited this waterfall a couple of times before, but we found much more water in the creek this time. Also, the color of the water was absolutely gorgeous.

A beautiful blue February Sky. February 11, 2013.
This past Monday Betsy and I hiked the King’s Bluff Loop Trail in the Ozark National Forest in Arkansas. We had been there several years before, but it was good to go back, especially on a pretty February day under a beautiful blue sky.

The trail led to King’s Bluff Falls which actually had a fairly good water flow. It was only a trickle the last time we were there.

After leaving the waterfall the trail looped around to rock outcroppings that over some spectacular views of rock pedestals formed by erosion over millions of years. Many of the pedestals have varied-colored lichen growing on the rock faces.
The hike was a wonderful way to enjoy the marvelous beauty of God’s creation.

On our last morning in Arkansas Betsy and I got up before dawn to watch the sun rise from Gaither Mountain near Harrison, Arkansas. We had traveled over the mountain the previous day and we knew the view was spectacular.
What we didn’t know is that we would be delayed by a road construction project that started before dawn. So the sky was already showing color by the time we got to the overlook (see photo above).

It took a while, but after a while the sun started to put in an appearance.

Later we were able to enjoy the sun in all of its golden glory. What a marvelous way to begin a day.

Don’t get me wrong — Betsy and I had a wonderful time in Arkansas as we celebrated her birthday. But I have to admit that our timing wasn’t the greatest. We enjoy ‘collecting’ waterfalls, and we planned our trip — several months ago — in order to see some waterfalls in a part of Arkansas we hadn’t visited before.
But Arkansas is in the midst of a terrible drought. We thought things were dry here in eastern Tennessee, but the situation is much worse in Arkansas. We were amazed at how dry and brown the pastures and lawns appeared.

All of the rivers we saw were low, and many of the creeks were bone dry. The two above pictures show Tomahawk Creek near Mountain View, Arkansas.
We hiked the Lost Valley Trail of the Buffalo National River. Although there was no water in Clark Creek which paralleled the trail, we enjoyed the hike. Since there was no water in the creek, we were able to explore a natural bridge carved by the creek in greater detail than we could if water had been flowing (more about that in a later post).

We didn’t see the waterfalls we had hoped to see, but we did enjoy our trip very much.

When Betsy lived and worked in Houston, Texas, she often spent the week after Christmas on vacation in Fairfield Bay, Arkansas. Since we were in the area while celebrating Betsy’s birthday, she decided to show me around.
After finding the timeshare she used to own, Betsy decided she wanted to drive down to the lake. She said this is something she did on every visit. On our way to the lake she told me about a beautiful house that she liked very much. She always told her friends (and her sons) that the house was her ‘dream house’ and that she would own it some day.

We drove by the house, and I must admit that it is very pretty. We only saw the front yard, but I liked the wooded setting. The house has a nice long deck along the front. I must admit that I liked it as well.
Before you read any further, I need to remind you that the first time I ever went to Fairfield Glade is when Betsy wanted to show me where she stayed during a vacation in Tennessee several years ago. You’ll see the relevance of this statement when you scroll down.

As I’ve mentioned several times, Betsy and I love to watch sunsets from ‘our’ cabin on Mount Nebo in Arkansas. It’s nice to sit on the patio and enjoy the setting sun.

It’s possible to see sunrises on Mount Nebo as well, but it involves more effort. Not only do we need to get up very early, we need to drive to Sunrise Point. But we do that at least once each time we visit Mount Nebo.

As many of you know, Betsy and I love Mt. Nebo in Arkansas. We’ve gone there at least once each year for several years now, always staying in the same cabin. When we go in February or March, we can enjoy the sunsets from the patio of the cabin. I took this picture at sunset in March of last year.

This is the scene Betsy and I enjoyed on our first evening on Mt. Nebo in Arkansas. We were on the back porch of ‘our’ cabin as we were treated to a spectacular sunset. The color in the sky was simply amazing.

Betsy and I went searching for waterfalls on our first day in Arkansas, and while coming back from a bushwhack to see Panther Bluff Falls, we met the caretaker of a camping area nearby who recommend we visit Dierks Lake, which was only a mile or so down the road.
Dierks Lake was formed when the Army Corps of Engineers built a dam on the Saline River in southwestern Arkansas. The picture above was taken near the public boat ramp on the lake. I’m glad we took the caretaker’s advice.

Last week Betsy and I were in Arkansas. We try to go there about this time each year. We have a favorite cabin on the top of Mt. Nebo which we think of as ‘our’ cabin. The views from the cabin, especially the sunsets, are spectacular this time of the year.
If you know anything about us, you know that it is hard for us to travel anywhere without looking for waterfalls to visit. This trip was no different. We drove from our home to Arkadelphia in southwestern Arkansas, where we spent the night. We then visited three waterfalls — Panther Bluff, Cossatot, and Shady Lake Cascade — before heading north to Mt. Nebo State Park.
Although we spent most of our time at Mt. Nebo, we did take day trips to Mount Magazine State Park and Petit Jean State Park. We did some hiking in both parks, especially Petit Jean, where we hiked to visit beautiful Cedar Falls.
We had a wonderful visit in Arkansas, as we always do. We had some concerns about the severe weather back here in Tennessee, as we heard of tornadoes near Crossville. We also had some interesting moments heading home as we kept hearing tornado warnings along our route on Friday. But fortunately we made it safe and sound and found everything in order at home, except for flashing digital clocks because the electricity had gone off.
