Home From Arkansas

March 1, 2010

Betsy awaiting the sunset outside our cabin on Mount Nebo. February 23, 2010.

It’s nice to be home.

Betsy and I had a wonderful few days in Arkansas.  It  is difficult to decide on a single high point for our time there.  We was the sun (something we still haven’t been able to do in Tennessee), beautiful waterfalls, glorious sunrises, majestic sunsets, and fascinating rock formations.

We stayed at our favorite cabin in Mount Nebo State Park.  In late February the sun sets directly opposite the back deck.  We did have to go to the other side of the mountain to see the sunrise, but even that was definitely worth while.

Although we stayed at Mount Nebo, we also visited Mount Magazine and Petit Jean, two other nearby state parks.  We had been to each before, but we managed to see something new in each park.

We had thought we would return to Garvan Gardens on our way to Nebo to enjoy the spring flowers, but the cold weather had delayed most of the flowers, so we decided to check out some waterfalls in the Ouachita Mountains.  We had not been in that region before, and enjoyed seeing new sights and visiting new waterfalls.

Since both of us have new cameras you can imagine the number of pictures we took  (then again, maybe you can’t!).  We’ll share some of those with you in the days ahead.

Scenic Sunday # 84: Mount Nebo, Arkansas

Sunset on Mount Nebo, Arkansas. December 2, 2008.

This is my post for the Scenic Sunday meme, which shares beautiful scenes from around the world.  To see more Scenic Sunday posts, or to join and show your own pictures, click HERE.

The picture above was taken at Sunset Point in Mount Nebo State Park, Arkansas.  Betsy and I are leaving for Mount Nebo early Sunday morning.  We have a favorite cabin on the mountain top and we always stay there when we visit the mountain.  This will be our sixth visit.  Can you tell that we like it there?

There are a couple of waterfalls on the mountain and several nice hiking trails, so I don’t think we’ll run out of things to do.  If we do decide to get off the mountain there are plenty of other waterfalls and beautiful scenes in the area.

I won’t be doing any new posts until we get back home.  I will have my iPod Touch with me, and if we can get internet service, I’ll visit as best I can.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to places that are special to my Beautiful Bride and me.

Down Memory Lane: Garvan Gardens

February 8, 2010

Scenes from Garvan Woodland Gardens, Arkansas. March 9, 2009.

When we went to Arkansas in March, 2009, we stopped a couple of places on our way to Mount Nebo.  We checked out a waterfall at Lake Catherine State Park and we also went to Garvan Woodland Gardens near Hot Springs.

We went to Garvan Gardens to check out a couple of waterfalls (aren’t you surprised?).  Garvan Gardens is The University of Arkansas’ Botanical Garden and is located on a 210-acre peninsula.  It started out as a private garden which was later donated to the University.

We found the waterfalls we were looking for — and much more.  The spring flowers were in full bloom and could be seen from many different places within the garden.  We spent a couple of hours walking through the different sections of the garden and enjoying the sights.

Falls Creek Falls, Arkansas

Scenes from Lake Catherine State Park, Arkansas. March 9, 2009.

When we to Mount Nebo in Arkansas last March we took a side trip to visit Lake Catherine State Park near Hot Springs.  Lake Catherine is a beautiful park with many facilities for recreation, but I’m sure you won’t be surprised to learn that what drew us to the park was a waterfall.

Falls Creek Falls is one of the favorite falls used in advertisements for Arkansas State Parks.  We didn’t find much water going over the falls, but the hike to the falls was very easy and pleasant.  Part of the hike was through the woods to the lake and then along the shore to Falls Creek.  We then hiked a short distance up the creek to the falls.

All in all we had a couple of very pleasant hours at Lake Catherine State Park.  We had a beautiful day, a nice hike, and of course we were able to add another waterfall to our collection.

I’m grateful for all the people who work so hard to make our parks wonderful places to visit.

Scenic Sunday # 79: Arkansas Sunrise

Sunrise Point, Mount Nebo State Park, Arkansas. December 4, 2008.

This is my post for the Scenic Sunday meme, which shares beautiful scenes from around the world.  To see more Scenic Sunday posts, or to join and show your own pictures, click HERE.

Mount Nebo State Park in Arkansas is one of our special places to visit.  We have a favorite cabin on the mountain top and try to get there each year.  Two of the nice features of the park is that there are perfect places to view sunrises and sunsets.

This picture was taken in December, 2008, at Sunrise Point.  If you look closely on the left of the picture you can see the Arkansas River in the valley below.  But the main feature of this photo is the sun, rising over the mountains to the east, looking like a star.

Skywatch Friday # 48

Clouds rolling into the Petit Jean River Valley. March 11, 2009.

This is my post for Skywatch Friday, a meme for sharing views of the sky from all over the world.  Last week many people shared their view of the sky.  To see more, or to join and share your own photos of the sky, click HERE.

While we were in Arkansas in March, Betsy and I visited Mount Magazine State Park on a dreary rainy day.  Mount Magazine has many wonderful views, several good hiking trails which we enjoy, and a wonderful restaurant that serves delicious lunches.

As we were getting ready to head back down the mountain we stopped at an overlook of the Petit Jean River Valley.  The sky was gray and dull looking, but there were clouds rolling over the mountains on the other side of the valley.  Even though the sky is indistinct, I like this picture anyway.

The picture above was taken on Mt. Nebo in Arkansas in December of last year.  It seems appropriate on this Easter morning to post a picture of a sunrise — that moment when the darkness of the world is about to be overcome by the light of heaven.

That’s exactly what is celebrated today — the Son rising; the Light of Heaven overcoming Darkness.

Our church service this morning will begin with these words:

Alleluia!  Christ  is risen.
The Lord is risen indeed.  Alleluia!

Garvan Woodland Gardens

I’m beginning to feel as if I’m moving backward with my to-do lists.  I’m now spending more time out in the yard.  That’s something I thoroughly enjoy, but it means I’m getting further and further behind on working on my  pictures.  I still haven’t gotten through all the pictures we took when we went to Arkansas .  Hopefully I can get them done before Christmas!

I’ve mentioned a couple of times that we went to Garvan Woodland Gardens near Hotsprings, Arkansas.  We went there because our Arkansas waterfall book had a listing for a waterfall in the garden.  The gardens are the botanical garden of the University of Arkansas and are well worth a visit if you are in the area.

The collage above is made up of the waterfall and several of the other streams and cascades in the gardens.  The streams were almost as pretty as the flowers.

This is my entry for Watery Wednesday, a weekly meme of pictures of our watery world.  Click HERE to join or to see more pictures from around the world.

The picture above was taken in Garvan Woodland Gardens, near Hot Springs, Arkansas.  The garden is the property of the Department of Landscape Architecture of the University of Arkansas.  The land, 210 acres on a peninsula of Lake Hamilton, was donated to the university by Verna Cook Garvan.

The gardens feature native plants, rhododendrons, and large collections of camellias, azaleas, and old roses along several mile of paths.  The gardens also contain a chapel and carillon, several small streams and a waterfall.  While we were there literally thousands of daffodils, tulips and pansies were in bloom.

The picture above shows a small cascade near the chapel in the garden.  It can be enlarged for a better view.

Falls Creek Falls

Falls Creek Falls, Lake Catherine State Park, Arkansas. March 9, 2009.

On my birthday Betsy and I were able to do some hiking in beautiful 80° weather.  We got to western Arkansas fairly early in the day and went to St. Catherine State Park (near Hot Springs)  to check out a waterfall, Falls Creek Falls.

Falls Creek Falls is used to advertise Arkansas State Parks, so we were interested in seeing it.  Of course, there was also something of a personal connection as well.  Our ‘special’ place is Fall Creek Falls here in Tennessee, so we were eager to see what that extra ‘s’ would mean.  Actually, I guess we’re just gluttons for punishment, having to keep Fall Creek Falls separate from Falls Creek Falls!

We had a nice hike of just under a mile from the parking area to the falls.  Much of the trail followed the shore line of Lake Catherine,  which made for a nice hike.  Once we got to the falls we were able to enjoy the falls and the setting.

You can enlarge the collage above to get a better view of our visit to Falls Creek Falls.
