I’ve been experimenting again. I’ve used Photoshop to horizontally stitch together pictures to make panoramas, but I had never tried to stitch pictures vertically.
When Betsy and I visited Dry Falls on our way home from our anniversary celebration, I captured three pictures of different parts of the the waterfall which I later stitched together to get the image above. I think the result gives a good view of Dry Falls.
Spring is now officially less than a week away, and some of us — myself included — are thinking of green grass, fragrant flowers and warm days. We’re glad to leave Old Man Winter behind.
Others, however, (and I’m not mentioning any names) are less happy to leave Winter behind. As most of you know, my Beautiful Bride loves snow. She really likes it when she can watch it snow through the day, and when it clings to trees and bushes.
Betsy says we never get enough snow here in the Glade, and I will admit that other places around here get more than we get. But we do get snow, even if it’s not a memorable blizzard.
I put this slideshow together to help Betsy remember the snow we got year. The pictures were all taken around our house or on our morning walks on the golf course. Hopefully it will help her get through the long months before Old Man Winter pays us a return visit.
In November, 2012, Betsy and I spent a couple of days in the mountains of eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina. One of the places we visited was Grandfather Mountain, not too far from Blowing Rock, North Carolina.
The day we visited Grandfather Mountain was beautiful, but cold. The cold didn’t bother us too much as we started up the mountain, stopping at the Sphinx, Split Rock and the Wildlife Habitat on the way. But by the time we reached the Mile High Swinging Bridge at the top, the wind was really blowing and it was cold, COLD, COLD! The weather had been mlld previously, so we weren’t prepared for the cold.
We made it across the bridge nevertheless, although for some reason there weren’t a lot of people around. After thawing out in the Visitor Center at the top, we headed back down the mountain for some warmer temperatures.
This slide show contains images taken that day during our visit to Grandfather Mountain. We’ve been back since, but the weather was milder at that time.

Betsy and I celebrated the holidays by meeting a blog friend in person. We have both followed Ruth for several years, and she quickly became a friend whom we enjoyed visiting on world wide web. Ruth is a marvelous photographer, and you can check out her beautiful blog HERE.
Ruth lives in western Canada, so when we learned several weeks ago that Ruth and her friend Gwen would be attending a gospel music convention in the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, we couldn’t let her get that close without meeting her in person, so we made plans to meet them.
Since neither Ruth nor Glen had ever been to Tennessee, we took them to Cracker Barrel for some good southern eating. Although we introduced them to cornbread and chicken and dumplings, the highpoint of the evening was talking as only friends can talk.

Ruth mentioned that she would like to get back to Tennessee with her son some day. We hope she makes it so we can show her the beautiful mountains of east Tennessee. Of course, we warned her that one of these days we might show up on her doorstep in Manitoba.

Betsy and I had our first ‘big’ date at Fall Creek Falls in late April, 2001. That was the beginning of our waterfall ‘collection’.
The next additions to our collection came about a month later. We went to Burgess Falls State Park near Cookeville, Tennessee. This park, which is only about an hour from our present home in Fairfield Glade, contains three waterfalls, and we hiked along the river to all three.
The collage above shows some scenes from that visit to Burgess Falls. The picture on the upper left shows the Falling Waters River above the three falls. The other picture on the top shows Burgess Falls — the main waterfall in the park — as we hiked down to the base.
The picture on the bottom left shows Betsy enjoying the mist at the base of Burgess Falls. Next is a view of the brink of Burgess Falls, followed by a side view of the falls as we hiked to the base.

In early June, 2001, Betsy and I were invited to the wedding of the son of one of Betsy’s childhood friends in Atlanta. We were invited to the rehearsal dinner as well the wedding itself, so we spent the weekend in Atlanta.
We took advantage of some free time on Saturday to visit Stone Mountain Park. I had been there a couple of times before, but it was fun exploring the park with Betsy. We took the gondola to the top of Stone Mountain to enjoy the view, and later visited the covered bridge and old mill in the park. That evening we attended the wedding and reception.
The collage above contains pictures from our weekend. Betsy is striking a fetching pin-up pose on the top of Stone Mountain in the picture on the top left, while the top right shows the water wheel of the old mill. The covered bridge is shown on the lower left, while Betsy is beautifying a rock in front of the iconic Stone Mountain carving in the lower middle. The picture of us on the right was taken that night at the reception.

April 21 is a special day that Betsy and I celebrate each year. It was on April 21, 2001, that I had my first ‘big’ date with Betsy. We spent the day at Fall Creek Falls State Park here in Tennessee. We did some hiking and checked out the waterfalls in the park. That was the beginning of our waterfall ‘collection’.

But what really made the day special was that on that day I got my first kiss from Betsy.
We go back to Fall Creek Falls every April 21 to re-live the magic. So if you don’t hear from me today, you’ll know where I am.

My Beautiful Bride is unhappy because we haven’t gotten much snow this winter — only two measurable snowfalls so far. I’ve been trying to tell her that things could be worse, but I’m not sure she believes me.

So I thought I would show her things could be worse. These pictures were taken in February, 2012, on a walk on one of the trails here in the Glade. As you can see, it was a beautiful sunny day without a cloud in the sky.

We walked around Lake Sherwood, and admired the reflections in the still water of the lake. All-in-all it was a beautiful day. And there wasn’t a snowflake in sight.

On January 20, Betsy and I drove and hiked along Middle Prong Little River in the Smokies. It was a beautiful sunny day, and there was a good water flow along the river. The water was so clear that we could easily see the stream bed.

We often stopped and walked along the river to enjoy the sight (and sound) of the water rushing over and around boulders in the stream.

As we worked our way up stream, the river just seemed to get more and more beautiful.

But I know well that not all of the pretty views that day were of the river.

Last week Betsy and I went to the Smokies to do some hiking and get some pictures. Unfortunately we didn’t get in much hiking, but we did get in a lot of photography. We drove and walked along Middle Prong of Pigeon River, since I wanted to try out my new lens and filter.
But in addition to trying out my new equipment, I couldn’t resist getting some pictures of Betsy at work. She didn’t have a new camera or lens, but she worked hard at getting good pictures herself. The picture above shows her getting a picture of some rapids in the river.

There were a couple of small waterfalls on the side of the road across from the river. Here Betsy is getting a picture of Stillhouse Hollow Falls.

I was lucky to get one or two pictures of Betsy without that camera in her face. Just look at that smile.
